POMONA, Calif. --- Cal State Monterey Bay split a doubleheader with Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday, winning the second game 9-3 after being beaten 18-3 in the opener at Scolinos Field.
#Shea Davis# and #Matt DeJesus# both went 3-4 with 2 RBIs in the 9-3 victory. DeJesus was a big reason the Otters led early. He led off the second inning with a single, stole second and scored on ground outs. Then hit a two-RBI single in the third.
Ahead 4-1 after five innings, CSUMB put the game away with five in the sixth. #Jayson Furia# collected two of his three RBIs in the inning with a base hit. CSUMB was aided by an error and a wild pitch. In fact, five of the runs were unearned.
#Lucas Allendorf# (1-1) picked up his first victory of the season by pitching five innings, allowing six hits and three runs. #Brian Callen# pitched the final two innings and did not allow a run.
Pomona had 18 hits in the opener, one for each run. #Addis O'Connor# (1-2) started the game and took the loss. He pitched five innings and allowed just one run in the first two innings, but gave up seven in the third. He then escaped the fourth with giving up a run, but allowed six more in the fifth and was pulled.
#Matt Rall# had two hits in the opener, four total on the day. Game temperatures reached 95 degrees on the field. The split brings CSUMB's record to 8-30 overall and 6-24 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. CPP is 9-24 overall and 6-14 in the CCAA. The two teams finish their four-game series on Sunday with a game at 11 a.m. at Scolinos Field.
