SAN FRANCISCO --- #Thomas Incaviglia# smashed a pinch-hit, two-run double to break a 4-4 tie in the eighth inning and the Otters went on to score two more in the inning to beat San Francisco State 8-4 Sunday and win the series 3-1.
CSUMB (7-14 overall, 5-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association) trailed early as the Gators (4-18, 1-11 CCAA) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings. Bobby Carini scored the Gators' first run after reaching base a base on balls and then stealing second and third. Nick Nyman gave the Gators a 3-0 lead with a two-run double in the second inning. Matt Edgecombe scored the Gators' fourth run on a RBI ground out by Evan Romanchuk in the third.
But the Otters scored the next eight runs. Their first was in the fifth when #Justin Rios# scored on a RBI ground out by #Andrew Degarmo#. They tied the game at 4-4 with a three-run sixth keyed by a two-run double by #Andrew Marquardt#. Marquardt scored the tying run on an overthrow by the Gators. CSU Monterey Bay broke the game open with the four-run eighth inning, keyed by Incaviglia's pinch hit.
#Charles Grosser# (1-3) picked up the win in relief for the Otters, pitching two scoreless innings while striking out one and walking two. #Michael Trump# kept CSUMB in the game, relieving Daniel Bifano in the third after he gave up three runs. Trump pitched the next four and gave up just one run. #Brian Callen# finished the game with one scoreless inning. #Matt DeJesus#, Rios and Marquardt all had two hits apiece for the Otters. Spencer Kreisberg fell to 1-4. He struck out seven Otters in seven innings while walking three, and giving up nine hits and six runs (five earned).
CSUMB faces CSU Stanislaus next, traveling to play in Turlock on Friday, then playing two at home on Saturday before finishing the four-game series back in Turlock.
