GOODYEAR, Ariz. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's golf team shot a combined 305 in the second round of the Grand Canyon University Invitational on Tuesday to rocket past its regional rivals and finish ninth at the tournament.
#Darcy Lake# led CSUMB, shooting a 75 to follow her 80 on Monday to finish in a tie for 16th overall. #Cicilia Chudivan# shot a 76 and finished in 27th with a 158; #Tivi Latu# shot 78 and tied Chudivan, while #Jessica Yee# shot a 76, a nine-stroke improvement on Monday's score. Yee finished tied for 38th at 161.
CSUMB trailed its three chief rivals in the tournament after the first round. The Otters shot a combined 327 on Monday, six strokes behind Western New Mexico, eight behind West Texas A&M and nine behind rival Chico State. Monterey Bay is ranked eighth in the region, behind all of those schools, and only six make it into the regional tourney.
But Tuesday's 305 put CSUMB, ranked No. 26 nationally, ahead of both No. 25-ranked West Texas A&M (11th place with 642) and Chico State (12th with a 650). Western New Mexico finished in seventh, just two strokes better than CSUMB.
Tuesday's round of 305 was the second best team score in the tournament and is the best team score in the CSUMB program's history. Last year the team shot a 306 at the same tournament.
