Otters Sweep Toros For First CCAA Victory

SEASIDE, Calif. –
The Cal State Monterey Bay women's volleyball team earned their first California Conference Athletic Association match of the season in a three-set (25-16, 25-19, 25-15) shutout tonight over the Toros of Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Freshman #Rheann Fall# snagged her fourth double-double of the season with 10 kills and 10 digs, while freshman #Dionna Lucas# registered 11 digs. Sophomore #Dana Grimm# dished out 26 assists. 

The Toros were led by Ashley Clark and TaMesha Jefferson with five kills apiece. 

In the first set, the Otters jumped out to a 9-5 lead on a kill by junior #Kerri Sudarsana#, but the Toros raced back to take its only lead of the set at 13-12.  CSUMB fired back with a 9-3 run that was fueled by a kill and a block by freshman middle blocker #Tiffaney Riggs#. Grimm ended the set with a kill.

The Toros came out on fire in the second threat with a 8-3 advantage. After a CSUMB timeout, the Otters went on a seven-point run with two kills by Fall and three consecutive CSUDH errors. The Toros attempted a comeback by taking a 16-15 lead but the Otters finally pulled away to take a 25-19 victory on a Sudarsana kill.

The Otters never even gave the Toros a chance in set three, dashing out to a 10-6 lead behind three kills by junior #Rayna Richardson#. Riggs and Richardson teamed up for a block to make the lead five at 19-14. After a serve error by CSUDH, the Otters took the match on a kill by Richardson.  In the final set, Richardson recorded four kills on five attempts for a .600 clip.

The Otters begin a seven game road trip before returning to the Kelp Bed on Friday, Oct. 31 for a match-up against Sonoma State.  CSUMB's first stop is Cal State Stanislaus on Friday, Oct. 10 with a 7 p.m. start time.
