Otters Win 2-1 Double Overtime Thriller Over Chico State

Junior Randall Rigali

Andy Binol scores game winning goal

October 18, 2008

CHICO, Calif.
– Junior #Andy Binol#'s game winning goal lifted the Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team to a double overtime 2-1 victory over Chico State University yesterday.  The Otters improved to 2-9 -4 overall with the win and 2-6-3 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play.

Binol volleyed home a shot from 10 yards away for the game-winner in the third minute of double overtime.  Senior #Nick McGill# flicked junior #Randall Rigali#'s cross over his head and on to Binol, who struck it between the near post and Chico State goalkeeper Michael Keohane for the win.

With the Wildcats controlling most of the match by out-shooting CSUMB 17-7, the Otters made the most of their opportunities by scoring twice in five shots on goal.

Chico State took a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute.  Kyle Crain hammered a free kick from 25 yards out off the far post and Zac Crim scored on the rebound.

The Otter also capitalized on a free kick for their first goal of the game. Junior #Nate Torricelli# scored on a rebounded shot by sophomore #Kevin Amaral# that rolled out of the grasp of Keohane's gloves.

With a season filled with four overtime ties and two overtime losses, this victory was a great birthday present for head coach Artie Cairel.

“With outstanding execution and determination by the team, this was a well deserved victory,” Cairel said. “After seven overtime conference games, getting a win on the road against a playoff contender shows the commitment of the team.”

The Otters will wrap up their road campaign on Sunday against Cal State Stanislaus.  Kick-off is at 2:00 p.m.
