Kurt Grahl begins fourth year as an assistant coach with the Otters men’s basketball team.
He is involved in all aspects of coaching including practices, scouting, film exchange and academic compliance.
Prior to joining the staff, Grahl was a successful high school basketball coach in the Sacramento area. In February 2010, Joe Davidson of the Sacramento Bee wrote an article in which he listed the best Sacramento area high school basketball coaches in his 20+ years of coverage and Grahl was on featured on the list.
In his final season before coming to the Otters, he coached Yuba City High School. The team was unranked in the local preseason Top 25 and returned one starter. By season’s end, Cal High Sports ranked Yuba City ninth in the state in Division II and set the school record for wins, going 23-1 in their final 24 games. Due to the team’s success, Grahl was named area Coach of the Year for 2010.
Grahl obtained a bachelor’s degree in physical education with a minor in mathematics from Central Michigan University. While teaching high school mathematics, he won site Teacher of the Year in 2002 and was a finalist for District Teacher of the Year in 2009.
Grahl also earned a J.D. from Indiana University School of Law, Bloomington and practiced law in California for four years, including at the Sacramento District Attorney’s office.
Grahl lives in Marina with his wife, Shelley. They have two daughters, Ella and Grace.
