Eric Wagle, White’s first hire after taking over the CSUMB program, begins his second season with Otter baseball in 2011–12. Wagle quickly established himself as a top pitching coach and recruiting coordinator and is proving to be an instrumental part of leading Monterey Bay baseball into prominence.
In addition to his on–field and recruiting duties, he also oversees all the team’s academics and designs the strength program. In short, Wagle assists White with all aspects of the program.
In his first season leading the Otter pitching staff, Wagle engineered a dramatic turnaround on the mound. The 2011 Otters staff lowered its earned run average by an amazing four runs from the 2010 version. The staff also shattered the school overall and conference records for ERA and opponents batting average. Individually, Jake Paolinetti set the single season record for wins and Paul Brock set the career mark for saves.
As recruiting coordinator, Wagle quickly showed that Monterey Bay Baseball is a premier destination for top student-athletes by signing 23 players to letters of intent. The deep and dynamic recruiting class will showcase Wagle’s efforts as one of the top recruiters on the west coast.
Wagle came to Monterey Bay after spending two seasons as the associate head coach at San Jose City College. While at SJCC, Wagle led the Jaguars to the two most successful seasons in school history, guiding them to the State Super Regionals two consecutive seasons. The Jaguars were one of only six teams in California to accomplish that feat.
At SJCC, Wagle was responsible for pitching, recruiting, compliance, academics, placement and apparel. His pitching staff broke the school record for earned run average in his first season and placed in the top five in northern California both seasons. Every one of his pitchers at SJCC signed an NCAA Division I or II scholarship during his tenure.
Wagle began his coaching career at prep power Live Oak High School. While at Live Oak, the Acorns won three Mount Hamilton League championships and a CIF Central Coast Section Division III championship in 2008, his final season with Live Oak. Wagle’s pitching staff broke the school record for ERA in 2008 and his staff led the league in ERA four of five seasons.
After graduating from Live Oak High School in 1999, Wagle attended San Jose City College where he was a 1st Team All–American and still holds the school record for saves. He attended Sonoma State for his last two collegiate seasons, helping the Seawolves earn a No. 4 national ranking and win a CCAA championship in 2003.
Wagle is a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association and works as an associate scout for the Washington Nationals.
Wagle, who serves as a lecturer in the kinesiology department at CSUMB. received his bachelor’s degree in sociology from Sonoma State in 2003. He followed that by earning a master’s degree in health and physical education from Saint Mary’s College in 2005.
Wagle is single and currently resides in Marina, CA.
