SEASIDE, Calif. — Sophomore goalkeeper
Willow Baltazar delivered a stellar performance between the posts and Cal State Monterey Bay's veteran defense stood tall as the Otters battled Western Washington to a scoreless draw Friday night in its season opener at Cardinale Stadium.
Baltazar was outstanding, turning away all six shots she faced to record the shutout. Five of those saves came during a second half in which Western Washington generated 10 shots. In front of her, the Otters received steady play from a veteran defensive group.
CSUMB was the more dangerous side early.
Gianna Foss forced Western Washington goalkeeper Ellie McGowan into a save just 72 seconds into the match and the Otters continued the pressure in the offensive third.
Taylor Grover nearly provided the breakthrough just before halftime, putting an attempt on frame as the first-half horn sounded, but McGowan made the save to send the teams into the break scoreless.
The match changed after halftime as Western Washington began to apply increased pressure.
That's when Baltazar took over.
Western Washington finished with 15 shots and six on goal, while Monterey Bay recorded eight shots with four on frame. The Vikings held a narrow 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.
For CSUMB, the draw continued the defensive identity under Otter head coach
Laura VanWart. The Otters allowed one goal or fewer in 11 matches and recorded five shutouts in 2025.
Friday's performance showed that identity remains firmly intact as the Otters opened 2026 by keeping a dangerous Western Washington side off the scoreboard for all 90 minutes.
CSUMB will continue its season-opening homestand with a Sunday matinee against Hawai'i Pacific. Kickoff is schedule for 11 a.m. from Cardinale Stadium.
