MARYSVILLE, Calif. — Cal Baptist transfer Derek Lekkerkerk (Twin Falls [Id.] HS) birdied four of his final five holes, vaulting to a second-place finish at the Chico State Wildcat Classic Tuesday at the Peach Tree Golf and Country Club.

Lekkerkerk's fantastic finish left him at 4-under for the day — Tuesday's best round by an individual — and 12-under for the tournament. He finished just two strokes behind Chico's Vineet Vallamsetty for medalist honors.

But he wasn't the only Otter whose scorecard bled with red ink this week. Sophomore Ben Christian (Dexter [Mo.] Senior HS) and freshmen Zach Easterling (Clovis West HS) and Tintin Wallin (Kungsangen, Sweden) all finished tied for 18th at 5-under.

Sophomore Zaid Khan (Sacramento/CMASAS) chipped in the final scoring round of the day at 1-under to leave the Otters at 8-under Tuesday.

That was good enough for a third-place finish at 28-under 836. Both of those marks smash the school records of minus-28 and 845 set when the Otters won the 2013 CCAA Championship at Hunter Ranch.

Three-under wasn't quite enough to catch 36-hole leaders Chico State and Stanislaus State, both of whom carded 5-under 283 in Tuesday's final round. Chico finished in first with Stanislaus six strokes ahead of CSUMB in second.

"I'm super happy with the team's performance this week," said CSUMB Head Coach Jason Owen. "This was a great start to the season. I know this group has a world of talent, so it's gonna be fun to watch us."

The Otters jump right back into fall action next week when they head to the Rockies for the San Juan Intercollegiate in Montrose, Colo., Sept. 14–15. They return to the Central Coast to host the 2026 Otter Invitational Oct. 11-13 at Bayonet-Blackhorse.
