SAN BERNARDINO – The No. 11-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team mounted a strong offensive effort against host Cal State San Bernardino, but fell short in an 11-9 decision in the CCAA Tournament quarterfinals held at Fiscalini Field.
The Otters scored in four separate innings, with particularly productive performances in the first, second, sixth, and seventh innings.
Bobby Benavidez led the offensive charge with two hits, including a home run and a double, driving in three runs and scoring twice. The centerfielder was responsible for the first three runs for CSUMB to give the Otters an early 3-0 advantage.
Kyle Olimpia contributed three hits with a home run and two RBIs, while
Conner Smith added a solo home run and an RBI.
James Starkus recorded two hits, including a double, and
Jason Del Villar contributed an RBI single.
CSUMB took an 8-7 lead after the seventh inning two-run shot off the bat of Olimpia, but CSUSB responded with four runs in the eighth inning to secure the victory.
Andrew Kotin allowed 10 hits and seven runs – three earned over seven innings while striking out five batters.
The Otters will have a quick turnaround and face Cal State San Marcos tomorrow at 11 a.m.
