Otters Prep For Playoffs With Run-Rule Win

CSUMB wins season finale at SFSU, 9-0

SAN FRANCISCO — The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team finished with a flourish by earning a 9–0, run-rule win over San Francisco State in its regular season finale Saturday on the SFSU Softball Field.

The Otter dropped Saturday's opener, 9–7, but that couldn't soften the impact of clearing the season's first hurdle, and that was a return to the postseason after a 2-year absence. CSUMB will enter next week's CCAA Championship Tournament with a 32–21 overall record and the No. 5 seed.

Malia Martin (Lynwood/Warren HS), Abreanna Alba (Watsonville HS/Cabrillo College) and Kieley Ganaden (North Salinas HS) all stayed red-shot, with each of them collecting four hits in Saturday's doubleheader. Alba's day included her 12th home run of the season.

Faith Soriano (Los Angeles/Archer School for Girls) added three hits, including her fourth homer and 12th stolen base. Leah Madden (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) chipped in a pair of hits and scored four runs.

Soriano's 3-run bomb helped the Otters take a 4–0 lead in the first inning of the opener. But the Otter pitching combo of Kaitlyn Le and Mikaya Griego couldn't contain SFSU's senior day lineup that pounded out 15 hits, including a two doubles and a home run.

After falling behind 8–4, CSUMB nearly pulled off the comeback, brining the potential go-ahead run top the plate in the seventh. But Gator pitcher Kharime Caratachea somehow managed to snare a screaming liner off Ganaden's bat for the final out.

Freshman righty Jordan Knutson (Medford, Ore./South Medford HS) made sure a comeback wouldn't be necessary in the nightcap, twirling a 3-hit shutout for her 11th win of the season. Freshman Emma Campos (Menifee/Liberty HS) made her first collegiate hit a big one, doubling down the left field line in the second inning to plate fellow freshman Grace Boyd (Rocklin/Whitney HS) with the only run Knutson would need.

The Otters scored in each of the final four innings, putting a 4-spot on the board in the fifth to push the game into run-rule territory.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Gator pitcher Kharime Caratachea somehow snared a liner off the bat of Kieley Ganaden — who represented the go-ahead run — for the final out.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Kieley Ganaden's bunt single plus a throwing error led directly to CSUMB's eighth and ninth runs in the fifth inning, allowing Jordan Knutson to close the game with an other scoreless inning.

OTTERS POSTSEASON BOUND FOR THE 11TH TIME: Cal State Monterey Bay is headed to the postseason for the 11th time in 16 attempts since becoming NCAA postseason eligible in 2008 (there was no postseason play in 2020 and '21 due to COVID). In eight of those season, CSUMB also advanced to the NCAA West Regional.

THE IRRESISTIBLE FORCE, PART I: The Otter offense has been an irresistible force in 2026. For the first time in program history, the Otters completed the regular season without being shutout. The Otters are the only team in the West Region that can make that claim in 2026.

THE IRRESISTIBLE FORCE, PART II: The Otters finished the regular season with 345 runs scored. They're the most runs scored in the regular season in program history and the No. 3 mark all-time in program history.

THE SULTANS OF SWAT: Thanks to Faith Soriano and Abreanna Alba, the Otters hit their 45th and 46th home runs of the season Saturday at San Francisco State. That is tied for the No. 2 spot on the CSUMB single-season home runs list. The 2009 squad owns the school record with 57 homers.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Emma Campos collected her first two collegiate hits in the season finale, including a double that drove in the game-winning run.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS: DOUBLES: Grace Boyd (2); TRIPLES: None; HOME RUNS: Faith Soriano (4).

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS: DOUBLES: Emma Campos (1); TRIPLES: None; HOME RUNS: Abreanna Alba (12).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters open play at the CCAA Championship Tournament Wednesday (May 6) at Pioneer Field in Hayward against Cal State Dominguez Hills at 2 p.m. The winner will face top-seeded Cal State San Marcos Thursday at noon.
