Otters Drop A Thriller At CCAA Tournament

Alba’s two HRs not enough in 8-6 loss to CSUDH

HAYWARD, Calif. — The softball gods toyed with the Cal State Monterey Bay softball team at Wednesday's California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament opener.

After Otter center fielder Abreanna Alba (Watsonville HS/Cabrillo College) tied the game up with a dramatic grand slam in the top of the seventh inning, the fickle deities allowed Cal State Dominguez Hills catcher Dyoni Garcia to walk the game off with a 2-run shot of her own that gave the Toros an 8–6 victory at Cal State East Bay's Pioneer Field.

The loss leaves CSUMB with a 32–22 record ahead of Monday's announcement of the NCAA Softball Championship selection show. Although the Otters will have to make the field as an at-large selection, they will enter the final rankings in a strong fifth in the latest West Region poll. The top eight teams in the final poll will advance to the West Regional.

Things started on the wrong foot for the Otters when a fielding error, a ground ball single and a pair of bloop hits staked Dominguez Hills to a 3–0 lead in the first inning. Alba got the Otters on the board with a blistering solo shot in the fourth inning, but the Toros answered in the fifth Savanna Kastigar's 3-run blast.

It stayed that way until the seventh, when a pair of walks and a fielder's choice loaded the bases with one out. Kieley Ganaden (North Salinas HS) singled to center to bring in one run and set the table for Alba, who delivered with a line drive down the right field line that stayed just inside the pole to clear the bases and knot the score at 6–6.

The Toro seventh began with a walk and a pop out to bring up Garcia. Otter reliever Jordan Knutson caught just a little too much plate with her 1–2 delivery and Garcia sent a liner to left that barely cleared the fence to end the game.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Dyoni Garcia connected on a 1–2 pitch for a seventh-inning home run that broke the 6–6 tie.

DOUBLE THE FUN, PART I: Abreanna Alba connected for two home runs in a game for the second time this season and the second time in the last three weeks. She is the first Otter to hit multiple homers in multiple games in one season since Julia Garcia did it three times during the 2017 season.

DOUBLE THE FUN, PART II: The Otters have hit multiple home runs in the same game 11 times in 2026. That's the most times since they did it in 12 games during the 2017 season.

THE SULTANS OF SWAT: Thanks Abreanna Alba's two bombs Wednesday, the 2026 Otters have moved up to the No. 2 spot in the CSUMB record book with 47 home runs. Only the CCAA Championship squad of 2009 ever hit more (57) in a single season.

EXTRA-BASE HITS: DOUBLES: None; TRIPLES: None; HOME RUNS: Abreanna Alba 2 (13, 14).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will wait patiently for Monday, when the NCAA announces its field of 64 for the 2026 NCAA Softball Championship. CSUMB will enter the final rankings at No. 5 in the West Region and needs to be in the top eight to make the tournament for the first time since 2022.
