Otters Sweep Gators, Clinch CCAA Tourney Bid

CSUMB surpasses 30 wins with 5-4, 6-4 victories

SAN FRANCISCO. — Cal State Monterey Bay took the first step in its postseason journey Friday at the SFSU Softball Field, sweeping a doubleheader at San Francisco State to earn a spot in next week's CCAA Championship Tournament.

The Otters took the opener, 5–4, in nine innings, before completing the sweep with a 6–4 win in the nightcap. CSUMB improved to 31–20 overall and 14–16 in the CCAA. SFSU dipped to 21–28 and 10–18.

Senior Kieley Ganaden (North Salinas HS) collected four hits, including her fourth home run of the season in Game 2, to pace the Otter offense.  Junior Abreanna Alba (Watsonville HS/Cabrillo College) added four hits, including a 3-run double, in the nightcap.

The teams traded 2-run leads in Game 1, with the Otters opening the scoring with a 2-run first inning. SFSU put deuces on the board in the third and fourth innings before a Faith Soriano (Los Angeles/Archer School for Girls) sac fly and an Ellie Escalante (Soquel HS) double leveled the score in the fifth.

Alba broke the tie four innings later with a 2-out, RBI single that cashed in a another 2-out single by Leah Madden (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS). Sophomore righty Kadence Nulick (Madera/Buchanan HS) shut the door with four innings of shutout relief.

The Gators broke the ice in the nightcap with a pair of hits, an error and a sac fly in the first inning. But Alba's bases-loaded scorcher to the fence in right center put the Otters on top, 3–1, in the third.

Malia Martin's (Lynwood/Warren HS) 2-run single extended the Otter lead to 5–1 in the fifth. SFSU scored twice in the sixth to make things interesting. Ganaden quieted the comeback with her solo shot in the seventh and freshman Jordan Knutson (Medford, Ore./South Medford HS) saw the game to its conclusion in the home half of the inning.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Ashley Rocha was caught leaving early trying to steal third base for the game's final out.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Jordan Knutson coaxed SFSU cleanup hitter Marissa Jordan to pop to shallow center for the final out with the potential tying runs on base.

POSTSEASON BOUND: By clinching their CCAA Championship Tournament bid, the Otters are returning to the postseason for the first time since 2023.

OTTERS JOIN 30-WIN CLUB FOR NINTH TIME: The Otters won their 30th and 31st games of the season with Friday's sweep at San Francisco State, marking the ninth time they have reached the 30-win mark since becoming full NCAA Division II members in 2008. Cal State Dominguez Hills (with 10) is the only other CCAA softball program that can make that claim.

DRIVING HOME HER POINT: With four RBI in Friday's sweep of San Francisco State, Abreanna Alba brought her season total to 50, tying Jamie Moon (2012) for No. 8 on the Otter single-season RBI list. She needs one RBI to tie Cori Reinhardt (2013) and Madison Casto (2015) for the No. 6 spot. Bianca Noriega holds the No. 5 (52 in 2014) and No. 4 (53 in 2015) positions on that list.

TOP 20 NULICK: Sophomore Kadence Nulick earned her 12th win of the season in Friday's sweep at San Francisco State. That moves her up to No. 19 in the Otter single-season record book. With her next win, she'll tie three Otters for 16th place.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Kieley Ganaden (4), Abreanna Alba (10), Ellie Escalante (9). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Abreanna Alba (11). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Kieley Ganaden (4).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude the 2026 regular season with another doubleheader at San Francisco State Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. As always, if you can't make it to the games, you can catch all of the action on the FloSports Network (OtterAthletics.com/watch).
