Otters Get Big Series Win With Senior Day Split

CSUMB maintains fifth place with four games to play

Story Links

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay captured a huge series win with a senior day split against Cal State San Bernardino Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex. San Bernardino rallied for a 13–11 win in the opener before Kadence Nulick (Madera/Buchanan HS) tossed her second shutout of the weekend with a 9–0 victory in the nightcap.

With the split, the Otters improved to 29–20 overall and 12–16 in the CCAA. The win keeps the Otters in fifth place in the CCAA standings entering the final weekend of the season, one game ahead of San Bernardino (21–25, 10–16) and San Francisco State.

Nulick finished a superb weekend with a pair of victories, allowing just one earned run in 18 innings of work. Her 4-hit shutout in the series finale was her fourth of the season, moving her up to 12th on the Otter single-season list.

She likely would have won both games Saturday after she came on in relief of freshman Jordan Knutson (Medford, Ore./South Medford HS) in the opener. But her defense made four errors behind her, allowing six unearned runs to score as the Coyotes rallied from an 8–4 deficit for the win.

That spoiled a wonderful offensive effort by CSUMB, which pounded 16 hits, its second most of the season, while scoring double-digit runs for the ninth time. Junior shortstop Faith Soriano (Los Angeles/Archer School for Girls) led the hit parade with two homers and five RBI.

Senior Gracie Strycula (San Dimas HS) also went 3-for-3 with her fourth triple of the year. Fellow senior Kieley Ganaden (North Salinas HS) also went 3-for-3 while Abreanna Alba (Watsonville HS/Cabrillo College) and senior Malia Martin (Lynwood/El Camino College) both doubled.

The finale saw the Otters fail to score a first-inning run for the first time in the series. They put a crooked number on the board in the second, however, with a pair of bases-loaded walks and an RBI single by Ganaden.

Strycula tripled home a run in the third inning to extend the Otter lead. CSUMB put the game away in the fourth thanks to a 2-run bomb from Alba, her 11th of the season, and a 2-run single by Strycula.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Ava Paquin tossed San Bernardino only 1-2-3 inning of the day in the seventh to preserve a 2-run win.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Gracie Strycula's 2-run single through the right side in the fourth inning brought home Aniya Lawson and Ellie Escalante, putting the Otters in run-rule territory at 9–0.

DOUBLE THE FUN: The Otters reached double-digits in runs for the ninth time this season in Saturday's opener. That ties the 2015 and 2016 teams for No. 3 all-time in program history. Only the CCAA Champion teams of 2012 and 2017 did it more, each recording 10 double-digit run games.

YA GOTTA HAVE FAITH: After not hitting an over-the-fence home run in the first 98 games of her collegiate career, Faith Soriano has hit three in her last nine outings, including two in Game 1 Saturday against San Bernardino.

DRIVING HOME HER POINT: With two more RBI Saturday against San Bernardino, Abreanna Alba took sole possession of the No. 9 spot on the Otter list for RBI in a single season. She needs four more to tie Jamie Moon (2012) for the No. 8 spot.

ALBA MOVES UP THE HOME RUN CHART: Abreanna Alba hit her 11th home run of the season Saturday against San Bernardino. She now is tied with Nevaeh Martinez (2026) and Jackie Serna (2012) for No. 6 on the Otter single-season home run list.

TOP 10 NULICK: Sophomore Kadence Nulick earned her 18th career victory in Saturday against San Bernardino. She needs one more win to catch Angela Cabral for ninth place on the Otter career wins list.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Abreanna Alba (9), Malia Martin (2). TRIPLES: Gracie Strycula (3). HOME RUNS: Faith Soriano 2 (2,3).

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: None. TRIPLES: Gracie Strycula (4). HOME RUNS: Abreanna Alba (11).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude the regular season portion of their 2026 schedule with a 4-game series at San Francisco State May 1-2. As always, if you can't make it to the games, you can catch all of the action on the FloSports Network (OtterAthletics.com/watch).
