Otters Conclude Series Sweep Of Wildcats

CSUMB runs win streak to 13 games with 2-1, 7-4 victories

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay got a great pitching performance in the opener and enough timely hitting in the nightcap to sweep a doubleheader from Chico State, 2–1 and 7–4, Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB (19–4, 4–0 CCAA) ran its winning streak to 13 games by completing the 4-game series sweep. Chico State fell to 6–10 and 0–4.

Saturday's opener saw some amazing softball played, especially from the circle. Sophomore Kadence Nulick (Madera/Buchanan HS) tossed a 5-hitter, allowing just a single, first-inning run on an RBI grounder to spoil a second consecutive shutout. Her opposite number, Chico ace Amelie Valdez, arguably was better, tossing a 1-hitter of her own.

The difference came on defense, where the Wildcats just missed a spectacular play and the Otters made one.

In the bottom of the first, Faith Soriano (Los Angeles/Archer School For Girls) drove a ball deep into the left-center gap. Chico leftfielder Hannah Levy laid out for a diving catch and had the ball in her glove, only to lose it when she hit the ground. The resulting triple proved to be the only Otter hit, bringing home both runs.

Where Chico just missed making the pay in the first, the Otter defense came up huge in the fifth. The Wildcats had two runners on with two outs in when Levy hit a screaming liner into the gap in right center that appeared destined to plate two runs. But Otter center fielder Abreanna Alba (Watsonville HS/Cabrillo College) came through with a spectacular catch to rob Levy and preserve the Otter lead.

The finale saw the Otters race to a 4–1 lead before a 3-run third inning allowed Chico to tie the game at 4–4. Sophomore Kaitlyn Le (San Ramon/California HS) came on in relief of starter Mikaya Griego (Diamond Bar HS) to quiet the Wildcat bats, allowing her offense time to rally for the win.

An RBI double off the fence in left by Nevaeh Martinez (Soquel HS) broke the 4–4 tie in the fourth inning. Run-scoring infield singles by Soriano and Leah Madden (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) added insurance the Le ultimately didn't need.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Kadence Nulick got three fielder's choice grounders after Aiyana Curry led off the sixth with a single. She struck out the side in the seventh to secure the win.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Kaitlyn Le coaxed Hannah Levy, representing the tying run, to foul out down the left field line to quell the final Wildcat threat in the sixth.

THE WINS KEEP ON COMING… The Otters ran their winning streak to 13 games with Saturday's doubleheader sweep of Chico State. The streak is the fourth longest win streak in Otter history. It's their longest streak since winning 14 in a row from Mar. 23–Apr. 8, 2022.

HOW SWEEP IT IS: The Otters have swept all four doubleheaders they have played in 2026.

HOW SWEEP IT IS, PART II: The Otters earned their first series sweep since taking four games from Cal Poly Humboldt Mar. 25-26, 2022.

STARTING OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT: CSUMB's 19–4 start is tied for the second best start ever in Otter softball history. The 2017 Otters also started 19–4 en route to a CCAA title and the No. 1 seed in the NCAA West Regional. CSUMB's best start ever came in 2015, when they began the season 20–3, also winning the CCAA title and earning the No. 1 seed in the West Regional.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: None. TRIPLES: Faith Soriano (3). HOME RUNS: None.

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Nevaeh Martinez (5). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters begin a grueling 12-game stretch against teams who are a combined 62–12 so far in 2026. The fun begins Friday (Mar. 13), when they begin a 4-game series at Cal State Dominguez Hills. If you can't make it to the games, you can catch all of the action on the FloSports Network (OtterAthletics.com/watch).
