Sweep of Toros Puts Otters In First Place

Otters win 9-1 and 10-1, run win streak to 15 games

CARSON, Calif. — The conference season is still young, but No. 20 Cal State Monterey Bay took early possession of first place with a 9–1 (6 inn.), 10–1 sweep of Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday at Toro Diamond.

The wins moved CSUMB (21–4, 6–0 CCAA) a game in front of No. 1 ranked Cal State San Marcos, which split a doubleheader with Chico State Friday. No. 2 ranked Cal State East Bay is idle from CCAA play this week and also sits one game back.

The wins also ran CSUMB's current winning streak to 15 games, which is the third-longest streak in program history.

The Otters used near flawless play in all three phases to earn Friday's sweep. The offense pounded 24 hits, including seven extra-base hits, while the pitching kept Toro bats almost silent. The CSUMB gloves did their part as well, playing two error-free games.

Run-scoring singles by Catherine Calzada (Lakewood HS/Sacred Heart Univ.) and Gracie Strycula (San Dimas HS) staked CSUMB to a 2–0 lead in the second inning of the opener. The Otters blew the game open with a 6-run sixth inning. Ellie Escalante's (Soquel HS) 2-run double capped the outburst.

That support was more than enough for sophomore Kadence Nulick (Madera/Buchanan HS), who scattered five hits to earn her sixth win of the season.

The Otters pulled away early in the nightcap, with Abreanna Alba's (Watsonville HS/Cabrillo College) 2-run bomb in the first giving freshman righty Jordan Knutson (Medford, Ore./South Medford HS) all the run support she would need to improve to 8–0 on the season.

CSUMB led 5–1 after six innings, then put the game on ice with a 5-run seventh. RBI singles by Escalante, Alba and Nevaeh Martinez (Soquel HS) got things started, before Katarina Manuofetoa (Monterey HS/MPC) delivered a 2-run double to close the scoring.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Ellie Escalante's 2-run double capped a 6-run sixth inning that gave the Otters a 9–1 lead.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Katarina Manuofetoa's 2-run double capped a 5-run seventh inning that gave the Otters a 10–1 lead.

THE WINS KEEP ON COMING… The Otters ran their winning streak to 15 games with Friday's doubleheader sweep of Cal State Dominguez Hills. The streak is third-longest win streak in Otter history. It's their longest streak since winning 18 in a row from Mar. 4–Apr. 2, 2017.

SORIANO KEEPS SOARING: Faith Soriano went 3-for-8 in Friday's doubleheader to run her current hitting streak to nine games. She is looking to become the 23rd different player in Otter history to post a streak of 10 or more games. FYI, Kieley Ganaden (11 game) and Nevaeh Martinez (10 games) did it earlier this season.

DOUBLE THE FUN: CSUMB's 10–1 victory in the nightcap was CSUMB's eighth game scoring 10 or more runs already this season. The Otters set the program record of 10 such games in their CCAA Championship campaigns of 2012 and 2017. The CCAA Championship team of 2015 and the 2016 squad had nine such games.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Ellie Escalante (2), Faith Soriano (3), Andrea DeJesus (4). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Nevaeh Martinez (6), Katarina Manuofetoa (1)). TRIPLES: Kieley Ganaden (6). HOME RUNS: Abreanna Alba (4).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters and Toros will conclude their 4-game series with a doubleheader Saturday at Toro Diamond. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
