Otters Sweep Chico In CCAA Openers

Otter arms allow just five hits in 4-0, 5-1 wins

Story Links

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay softball continued to roll Friday, opening California Collegiate Athletic Association play with a 4–0, 5–1 sweep of Chico State at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB (17–4, 2–0 CCAA) ran its winning streak to 11 games with the victories. Chico dipped to 6–8 and 0–2.

Pitching dominated Friday, but it was the young arms of the Otters who out-dueled the heralded Wildcat staff. Sophomore Kadence Nulick (Madera/Buchanan HS) tossed a 3-hit shutout to win Game 1. Freshman Jordan Knutson (Medford, Ore./South Medford HS) was equally dominant in a 2-hit win in the nightcap.

An RBI single by shortstop Andrea DeJesus (Live Oak HS/West Valley College) broke the seal on a 3-run Otter second in the opener. Gracie Strycula (San Dimas HS) drove home DeJesus with a triple to cap the outburst. A Nevaeh Martinez (Soquel HS) sac fly in the fifth added insurance.

The insurance wasn't needed, however, as Nulick was in complete control. She fanned six batters and walked just one to improve to 4–2.

Back-to-back doubles by Kylie Ganaden (North Salinas HS) and Abreanna Alba (Watsonville HS/Cabrillo College) got the Otters rolling in the first inning of Game 2. Alba eventually stole home in front of an RBI triple by Faith Soriano (Los Angeles/Archer School For Girls) to cap the 3-running inning.

Alba closed the scoring by hitting a towering home run over the scoreboard in left field leading off the fifth inning.

That proved to be more than enough support for Knutson, who improved to 7–0 with her first collegiate 2-hitter. She allowed just two singles while striking out a season-high six batters.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Abreanna Alba gunned down Ali Lewis trying to score on a fly ball to center in the sixth inning. Lewis was the only Wildcat to advance as far as third base in the game.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Abreanna Alba hit a moonshot over the scoreboard in left field to make it 5–1 Otters in the fifth inning. The homer was in response to Chico scoring its only run of the game in the top half of the inning.

THE WINS KEEP ON COMING… The Otters ran their winning streak to 11 games with Friday's doubleheader sweep of Chico State. The streak is tied for the fourth longest win streak in Otter history. It's their longest streak since winning 14 in a row from Mar. 23–Apr. 8, 2022.

ALL GOOD THINGS MUST END: Nevaeh Martinez ran her hitting streak to 10 games with a double in Game 1 before going hitless in the nightcap. She is the 22nd player in Otter history to post a hitting streak of 10 or more games. FYI, Kieley Ganaden had an 11-game streak earlier this season.

FOR (CCAA) OPENERS) With Friday's sweep of Chico State, the Otters now are 20–20 all-time in CCAA opening doubleheaders. They are 8–6 when opening CCAA play at home.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Nevaeh Martinez (4). TRIPLES: Gracie Strycula (2). HOME RUNS: None.

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Kieley Ganaden (4), Abreanna Alba (3), Catherine Calzada (4). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Abreanna Alba (4).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters and Wildcats will conclude their 4-game series with a doubleheader Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex, First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. If you can't make it to the games, you can catch all of the action on the FloSports Network (OtterAthletics.com/watch).
