Mora, Otters Enjoy Historic Win Over Pomona

Michael Mora scores 41 points, Otters win 97-80

Story Links

SEASIDE, Calif. — Sophomore Michael Mora (Palo Alto/Univ. of Vermont) set the Cal State Monterey Bay record with 41 points in a regulation game to lead the Otters to an historic 97–80 win over Cal Poly Pomona Saturday afternoon in The Kelp Bed.

Mora's outburst tied the record set by Davion Berry in a win over Cal State San Bernardino during the 2011 season. Richard Jenkins scored 40 in regulation en route to the Otter all-time record of 57 points in a four-overtime victory over Western Oregon in December of 2006.

The win was historic for the Otters, who completed a season sweep of Cal Poly for the first time in program history. CSUMB took a 79–75 decision from Pomona in January.

Pomona actually raced to an 11–3 lead in the first three minutes, but it was all Otters from there. It took CSUMB less than three minutes to tie the game at 14–14 on a Mora 3-pointer.

It was still a 1-point game inside the final nine minutes of the first half when a pair of Jaden Tengan (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian) free throws started the Otters on a 26–4 run that gave them a 52–29 lead at intermission.

The Otter lead grew to as many as 32 points in the second half before Pomona chipped away at it. But the Broncos never got closer than the 17-point final margin.

Mora just missed his third double-double of the season by grabbing a game-high nine rebounds. Joey Bilello (Littleton, Colo./ThunderRidge HS) and Chol Deng (Sydney, NSW Australia) joined Mora in double figures with 12 and 11 points respectively.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when Jackson Corley knocked down a 3-pointer to give the Otters a 90–65 lead with 5:41 remaining.

HOW SWEEP IT IS: Saturday's 97–80 win over Cal Poly Pomona not only was CSUMB's first-ever season-sweep of the Broncos, it marked the first time the Otters have defeated Pomona twice in a row. In fact, CSUMB now has taken three of the last four from the Broncos.

RECORD-BREAKING HALF LEADS TO MORA'S RECORD: Michael Mora set a CSUMB record with 29 points in the first half of Saturday's 41-point performance versus Cal Poly Pomona. That broke the record of 23 points in a half set by Richard Jenkins in a 2006 win over Western Oregon and again by Davion Berry in a 2010 win over Cal State San Bernardino. Both Jenkins' and Berry's efforts came in the second half.

MORA FROM WAY DOWNTOWN: Michael Mora tied the CSUMB record with eight 3-pointers in Saturday's win over Cal Poly Pomona. Joe Wall did it twice during the 2022-23 season and Brandon Ward did it in 2012.

MORA FROM CLOSER IN: It didn't really matter from where Michael Mora shot in Saturday's 41-point tour de force. He also tied the CSUMB record by going 11-for-11 from the free-throw line. Jahvon Johnson is the only other Otter to pull that off, going 11-for-11 against Cal State San Bernardino in 2019.

OTTERS FROM WAY DOWNTOWN: Led by Michael Mora's eight long shots, the Otters made 15 from beyond the arc in Saturday's win over Cal Poly Pomona. That is tied for No. 3 in the Otter record book. It's also the third time the Otters have tied that mark this season.

MORA UP TO 18TH ON CAREER SCORING LIST: Thanks to Saturday's 41-point outburst, Michael Mora leaped past both Richard Jenkins and Levi Frankland to the No. 18 spot on the Otter career scoring list with 722 points. He needs eight to pass Jose Sanchez for 17th and 15 to pass Rocky Steryo for 16th place.

TRIPLE-DOUBLE DIGITS: Once again, at least three Otters scored in double digits in Saturday's win over Cal Poly Pomona. This time, the honors went to: Michael Mora (41), Joey Bilello (12) and Chol Deng (11). It marked the 26th consecutive game in which at least three Otters scored in double figures.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Michael Mora 41; REBOUNDS: Michael Mora 9; ASSISTS: Miki Gacic 3; BLOCKS: Joey Bilello 2; STEALS: Michael Mora 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… CSUMB hits the road for a pair of games in Southern California next week, starting with a rematch versus Cal State L.A. Thursday (Feb. 12). They'll tip-off at 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
