Otters make school-record 34 FTs in 89-82 victory

Story Links

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay made a school-record 34 free throws Thursday night to power an 89–82 win over visiting Cal State San Bernardino in The Kelp Bed.

The 34 free throws smashed the previous record of 31, which was set five times, last against Cal State Dominguez Hills in 2019. Jaden Tengan (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian) did the yeoman's work from the line, going a career-best 13-for-15 as part of his game-high 26 points.

Tengan's 13 free throws rank No. 8 on the Otter individual records list.

The teams played through an incredibly close first half that featured seven ties and 10 lead changes. Joey Bilello (Littleton, Colo./ThunderRidge HS) broke the final tie with a late 3-pointer to send CSUMB into the lockerroom with a 34–31 lead.

The Otters never trailed in the second half, building their lead to as many as 12 points. The Coyotes never folded, however, drawing to within three points three times, but never getting over the hump.

In addition to Tengan, Michael Mora (Palo Alto/Univ. of Vermont) scored 17 points, including an 8-for-8 effort from the line. Senior center Mezziah Oakman (Columbia, S.C./UCSB) chipped in his team-leading fifth double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when an emphatic Ashton Reese dunk beat the Coyote press to put the Otters on top 87–80 with five seconds remaining.

OTTERS SNAP A STREAK: Thursday's 89–82 win over Cal State San Bernardino snapped an 11-game losing streak to the Coyotes dating back to 2019.

TENGAN UP TO 23RD ON SEASON SCORING LIST: Jaden Tengan's 26-point night in Thursday's 89–82 win over Cal State San Bernardino moved him up to No. 23 on the Otter single-season scoring list with 378 points. He needs 14 points to pass Brandon Ward (2013) for a spot in the Top 20.

TENGAN UP TO 5TH ON CAREER SCORING LIST: Jaden Tengan's 26-point night in Thursday's 89–82 win over Cal State San Bernardino moved him up to No. 5 on the Otter career scoring list with 1,058 points. He needs 18 points to pass Matt Dalhamer for No. 4.

TRIPLE-DOUBLE DIGITS: Once again, at least three Otters scored in double digits in Thursday's win over Cal State San Bernardino, with five Otters turning the trick. This time, the honors went to: Jaden Tengan (26), Michael Mora (17), Mezziah Oakman (14), Chol Deng (12) and Joey Bilello (11). It marked the 25th consecutive game in which at least three Otters scored in double figures.

A QUINTET OF DOUBLE-DIGITS: Thursday's win over Cal state San Bernardino marked the 12th time in 21 games this season that at least four Otters scored in double digits, and the fourth time that five Otters did it.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jaden Tengan 26; REBOUNDS: Mezziah Oakman 11; ASSISTS: Ariya Briscoe/Chol Deng/Michael Mora/Mezziah Oakman 2; BLOCKS: Chol Deng/Ashton Reese 1; STEALS: Chol Deng/Michael Mora 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… CSUMB concludes its 4-game homestand by hosting Cal Poly Pomona Saturday. They'll tip-off at 3 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
