SEASIDE, Calif. - The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team dismantled San Francisco State, 70–51, to close out its home schedule and send five seniors out with a weekend sweep at the Kelp Bed.
The Otters (13–12, 10–10 CCAA) utilized a blistering start and a bench-led explosion to build a lead that reached as high as 30 points before the final horn. The sweep in Seaside sends the Otters on a crucial two-game road swing to close out the regular season, vying for a postseason berth.
From the opening tip, CSUMB was in total control. The Otters jumped out to a 25–13 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. By halftime, the lead had stretched to 40–23, but the knockout blow came in the third period.
The Otters shot a phenomenal 70% (7-of-10) in the third quarter alone. While the Gators struggled to find any rhythm, CSUMB put on a clinic of fast-break basketball and interior scoring.
By the end of the third, the score stood at 60–33, a 27-point cushion that effectively ended the contest heading into the final frame.
The story of the game was the Otters' depth. CSUMB's bench outscored the SF State reserves by a massive 35–2 margin.
Janelle Peña led the charge from the bench with a perfect shooting night, going 5-for-5 from the field, finishing with 12 points in 12 minutes of action. Cheyanne Whitfield, on her Senior Day, narrowly missed a double-double, contributing 11 points and seven rebounds in 22 minutes of work.
Riley Walls set the tone early, knocking down two triples on her way to 11 points. Jennifer Moreno Ortiz continued her steady play with 10 points for her eighth-straight double-digit performance. At the same time, Aajah Slocum and Leah Sarabia each swiped six steals, anchoring a defense that forced 23 Gator turnovers.
The Otters' efficiency was the difference-maker, finishing the game shooting 49-percent from the floor and a sharp 50-percent (7-of-14) from beyond the arc. CSUMB also dominated the transition game, racking up 19 fast-break points and outrebounding SFSU, 32-25.
Now the Otters embark on a huge road trip to conclude the regular season. CSUMB will head to Humboldt on Thursday, Feb. 26, and then face Chico State on Saturday, Feb. 28.
