SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay softball finished an impressive home-opening week with a pair of run-rule victories over future CCAA member Menlo College, winning 13–5 and 8–0 Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB (10–4 overall) raced to a 6–0 lead after three innings in the opener, then closed the game with three in the fifth and four in the sixth. In the nightcap, a 4-run fifth inning sealed the deal as the Otters won by run-rule for the third and fourth times this season.

The Otters pounded out a season-high 18 hits in Game 1, including four doubles and a triple. Game 2 saw a 13-hit Otter barrage, including Aolani Uriarte's (Downey HS) first collegiate double and Kieley Ganaden's (North Salinas HS) first home run since her freshman year.

Ganaden once again was CSUMB's hitting star, raising her season average to .511 by finishing the day 4-for-5 with a triple, a home run, three runs and four RBI. Sophomore Nevaeh Martinez (Soquel HS) has fully emerged from her opening week lull, raising her average to .311 after going 6-for-8 with a double and five RBI.

The list of hitting stars didn't end there. Nani Arreola (Oaks Christian HS) doubled in both games as part of her 5-for-7 afternoon. Abreanna Alba (Watsonville HS/Cabrillo College) went 4-for-6 with four runs and four RBI.

In the circle, freshman Jordan Knutson (Medford, Ore./South Medford HS) continued to sparkle, tossing her fourth complete game and second shutout of the season in the nightcap to improve to 4–0. She allowed only four hits and struck out a season-high five batters.

Sophomore Kandence Nulick (Madera/Buchanan HS) was credited with the win in the opener. She yielded just one hit in 1 1/3 innings of scoreless  relief.

Kaitlyn Le (San Ramon/California HS) got the start in Game 1 and opened with three nearly perfect innings. But the first four Oaks reached base in the top of the fourth. Mikaya Griego (Diamond Bar HS) came on in relief, but struggled to find the zone, walking three batters before Nulick came on to settle things down after Menlo had closed to within 6–5.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Catherine Calzada delivered a bases-loaded single up the middle to plate the 13th run and walk the game off.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Abreanna Alba lined a shot down the right field line with the bases loaded to drive home Ellie Escalante with the run-rule clinching score.

DOUBLE THE FUN… The Otters posted their fifth double-digit run game of the season in the 13–5, Game 1 win over Menlo College Friday. That mark already is tied for No. 7 on the Otter list for double-digit run games in a season. The program record of 10 was set in the CCAA Championship years of 2012 and 2017.

GANADEN IS STILL RED HOT: Kieley Ganaden ran her current hitting streak to 11 games by going 4-for-5 with a triple, a home run, three runs and four RBI. She's now up to second in the CCAA in hitting with a team-best .511 batting average. She also leads the CCAA with five triples and is second in both on-base percentage (.585) and OPS (1.407).

MOVE OVER TED WILLIAMS: Kieley Ganaden (.511) is one of four Otter regulars hitting better than .400 through the first 14 games this season. Joining her on that list are Catherine Calzada (.444), Leah Madden (.424) and Ellie Escalante (.417). Reserves Jaedyn White (.500 in 20 ABs) and Faith Soriano (.429 in 16 ABs) are also in that territory.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Nani Arreola (2), Andrea DeJesus (1), Malia Martin (1), Nevaeh Martinez (3). TRIPLES: Kieley Ganaden (5). HOME RUNS: None.

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Nani Arreola (3), Andrea DeJesus (2), Faith Soriano (2), Aolani Uriarte (1). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Kieley Ganaden (1).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will close their brief 4-game homestand Friday when the welcome soon-to-be CCAA member Menlo College for a nonconference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
