Otters Give Skyhawks Swift Kick At Kickoff Classic

CSUMB run-rules Fort Lewis 10-1, improves to 4-1 overall

IRVINE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay closed play at the Concordia Kickoff Classic with another dominating performance, this time in the form of a 10–1, run-rule victory over Fort Lewis College at Great Park.

CSUMB finished tournament play at 4–1 overall. Fort Lewis dipped to 1–4.

The Skyhawks actually took a 1–0 lead on an RBI groundout in the top of the second inning, but it was all Otters after that. A bases-clearing double by Nani Arreola (Oaks Christian HS) highlighted a 5-run CSUMB second. Faith Soriano's (Los Angeles/Archer School for Girls) 2-run triple was the big hit in a 5-run Otter third.

The Otters needed just six hits to produce their second double-digit output in five games. They combined to draw eight walks in four innings, with senior Gracie Strycula (San Dimas HS) accounting for three of those.

Soriano and Kieley Ganaden (North Salinas HS) each had a pair of hits. Soriano, Strycula, Ganaden and Leah Madden (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) scored two runs apiece.

Sophomore Mikaya Griego (Diamond Bar HS) was the beneficiary of the offensive onslaught. She struck out three and allowed just three hits in the second complete game victory of her young career.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Nani Arreola's bases-loaded double made it 5–1 Otters in the second inning. The Skyhawks never got the tying run to the on deck circle for the rest of the game.

SPRINTING OUT OF THE BLOCKS: The Otters have started 4–1 for the eighth time in program history and the first time since 2022. Excluding the COVID-shortened 2020 season, they have advanced to the NCAA Tournament every time they have started 4–1.

PRODIGIOUS POWER: The Otters posted a healthy .519 slugging percentage at the Concordia Kickoff Classic. Impressively, they did it without the benefit of any home runs. CSUMB posted 13 extra-base hits — six doubles and seven triples — in five games at the tournament.

CATCHER CALZADA CATCHES FIRE: Sophomore catcher Catherine Calzada, a transfer from Sacred Heart University, began her Otter career on fire, hitting .636 (7-for-11) in four appearances at the Concordia Kickoff Classic. Included in her output were two doubles and a team-high six RBI.

IN THE CIRCLE, THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT: Despite playing without 2025 ace Kadence Nulick, who was nursing an injury last weekend, the young Otter arms more than held their own in the circle. All three pitchers (freshman Jordan Knutson and sophomores Mikaya Griego and Kaitlyn Le) picked up victories in Irvine, with Knudson throwing complete-game victories in both of her starts. The trio posted a combined ERA of 2.57 and opponent batting average of .222.

EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Nani Arreola (1). TRIPLES: Faith Soriano (1). HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head right back to Southern California for five games at the West Coast Challenge Feb. 6–8 in Lake Elsinore. They'll begin tournament play Friday with games against Western New Mexico (4:30 p.m.) and Azusa Pacific (7:30 p.m.).
