Otters Dig The Long Ball At West Coast Challenge

CSUMB hits six homers in beating WNMU and Azusa Pacific

LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. — The high-powered Cal State Monterey Bay offense took it to an entirely new level Friday while sweeping its first two games at the D2 West Coast Challenge at the Rosetta Canyon Sports Park.

The Otters hit their first three home runs of the season while winning a 10–8 slugfest with Western New Mexico in their first game. They then hit three more bombs in a 13–9 win over Azusa Pacific.

With the victories, CSUMB improved to 6–1 overall, marking the sixth time in program history the Otters have started 6–1 or better, and the first time since 2022.

CSUMB jumped out to big leads in both game before withstanding big rallies by its opponents. Shortstop Andrea DeJesus (Live Oak HS/West Valley College) broke the seal on the Otters' home run ledger with a 2-run shot to highlight a 3-run second inning against WNMU. Ellie Escalante (Soquel HS) hit her first collegiate home run, a 3-run blast, in the third inning and DeJesus added another 2-run job in the fourth.

The Mustangs scored four answered runs to crawl back to within two after six innings. But 2025 ace Kadence Nulick (Madera/Buchanan HS) slammed the door shut in her first appearance this season, pitching a scoreless, hitless seventh to earn the save.

The Otters raced to a 7–0 lead in the first three innings versus Azusa Pacific. Nani Arreola (Oaks Christian HS) and Nevaeh Martinez (Soquel HS) bookended the rally by each hitting her first home run of 2026.

The Cougars roared back late, however, scoring eight unanswered runs over the fourth and fifth innings to take their first lead of the afternoon. But the Otters fired right back, with a 3-run Martinez homer capping a 6-run sixth inning that helped put the game away.

Nulick struck out a pair over 2 1/3 innings of relief to earn the victory.

THE WESTERN NEW MEXICO GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Kadence Nulick fanned Addisen Byers, who represented the tying run, for the final out.

THE AZUSA PACIFIC GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Nevaeh Martinez hit CSUMB's sixth and her second home run of the day — a 3-run shot — to give the Otters an insurmountable 13–8 lead in the sixth inning.

SIX AND WON… With Friday's wins, CSUMB has started 6–1 or better for the sixth time in program history. It's worth noting that each of the previous five times they did it (2010, 2012, 2015, 2017, 2022) they advanced to the NCAA Regional Championship Tournament.

DOUBLE THE RUNS, DOUBLE THE FUN… Friday's victories over Western New Mexico (10–8) and Azusa Pacific (13–10) mark the third and fourth time in seven games that the Otters have scored double-digit runs. That's already the 11th most in a season in program history. The Otter record for double-digit run games is 10, set in 2021 and again in 2017.

EXTRA-BASE HITS vs. WNMU… DOUBLES: None; TRIPLES: None; HOME RUNS: Ellie Escalante (1), Andrea DeJesus 2 (1,2).

EXTRA-BASE HITS vs. APU… DOUBLES: Kieley Ganaden (1); TRIPLES: None; HOME RUNS: Nani Arreola (1), Nevaeh Martinez 2 (1,2).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue play at the D2 West Coast Challenge Saturday when they meet Simon Fraser University at 2:30 p.m. and Colorado Christian at 5 p.m.
