SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer continued to showcase its resilience Saturday afternoon, overcoming an early two-goal deficit to earn a 2-2 road draw against Cal State San Bernardino at Premier Field, extending its program-record unbeaten streak to eight consecutive matches.
The Otters improved to 6-2-6 overall and 4-2-4 in CCAA play, remaining unbeaten since Sept. 20. CSUMB has gone 4-0-4 over its last eight matches, collecting 16 of a possible 24 conference points during the stretch.
Saturday's result was particularly impressive against a Cal State San Bernardino squad that entered the contest unbeaten in conference play and atop the CCAA standings.
The Otters faced adversity almost immediately, falling behind 2-0 after the Coyotes scored twice in a span of just 30 seconds during the 11th and 12th minutes.
Despite the early setback, Monterey Bay refused to fold.
CSUMB began generating opportunities throughout the remainder of the opening half, earning four corner kicks and registering four shots before the break. The Otters carried that momentum into the second half, where they outshot the Coyotes 8-4 and controlled much of the attacking pressure.
Chloe Van Winkle sparked the comeback in the 56th minute, finding the back of the net at 55:38 off an assist from
Miye Kodama. The goal was Van Winkle's first of the season and cut the deficit in half, giving Monterey Bay renewed life with more than 34 minutes remaining.
The Otters continued to push forward in search of the equalizer, creating several opportunities while maintaining pressure on the San Bernardino defense.
Their persistence finally paid off in the 82nd minute.
After earning a penalty kick, Kodama stepped to the spot and buried the equalizer at 81:47, completing Monterey Bay's comeback from two goals down. The goal was Kodama's fourth of the season and capped a three-point afternoon for the Otter midfielder, who finished with a goal and an assist.
The equalizer also ensured that CSUMB's remarkable unbeaten run would continue.
Monterey Bay held firm over the final eight minutes to secure a valuable road point against one of the conference's top teams, completing its first comeback from a two-goal deficit this season.
The Otters finished with a 12-10 advantage in shots, including an 8-4 edge in the second half. CSUMB also dominated the corner-kick battle, earning eight opportunities compared to just two for the Coyotes.
Gianna Foss led Monterey Bay with three shots, while Kodama and
Ariana Chisteckoff each added two. Chisteckoff put both of her attempts on frame, providing another offensive spark off the bench.
Defensively, goalkeeper
Willow Baltazar played all 90 minutes and recorded three saves, including two in the second half, as the Otters held San Bernardino scoreless over the final 78 minutes.
Van Winkle anchored the back line with a full 90-minute performance while contributing the goal that ignited the comeback.
Saturday's draw adds another chapter to an impressive stretch for Monterey Bay, which has now gone eight consecutive matches without a loss, the longest unbeaten run in program history.
Since beginning the streak with a 2-0 road victory at Cal State San Marcos on Sept. 25, the Otters have recorded four victories and four draws, including five shutouts. CSUMB has outscored its opponents 14-4 during the run.
Monterey Bay returns home to Cardinale Stadium on Thursday, Oct. 22, to host Cal Poly Humboldt at 4 p.m.
