Early Run Leads Otters Past Bobcats, 86-80

Bilello leads five in double figures with 19

MERCED, Calif. — A big early run put Cal State Monterey Bay in control and the Otters never looked back in an 86–80 win over CCAA newcomer UC Merced Sunday evening in the Gallo Center.

Junior forward Joey Bilello (Littleton, Colo./ThunderRidge HS) scored nine of his season-high 19 points in a lightning fast 17–0 run that gave the Otters their first double-digit lead before the game was five minutes old. Merced kept CSUMB within shouting distance for most of the afternoon, but never got closer than two possessions over the final 37 minutes.

The Bobcats actually scored the game's first four points. But a pull-up jumper from Jaden Tengan (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian) and a Bilello three quickly erased that deficit and it was off to the races from there.

CSUMB still led by double digits inside the final minute of regulation before a couple of late buckets, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer, made the final score look a bit closer.

In addition to Bilello, Tengan followed up his 27-point effort at Stanislaus State with 18 Sunday in Merced. Ashton Reese (Scottsdale, Ariz./UMBC) knocked down three triples as part of his 13-point performance off the bench.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when Chol Deng made the first of two free throws with 17 seconds remaining to extend the Otter lead to 85–77.

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE ROAD: After falling by two points Friday at Stanislaus State, the Otters bounced right back into the road win column with Sunday's 86–80 win at UC Merced. Their 4–1 road record is their best road start ever through five games. CSUMB started 3–2 on the road three times previously, most recently in the 2021-22 season.

TAKE THEM, THEY'RE FREE: The Otters enjoyed one of their best days ever from the free-throw line in Sunday's 86–80 win at UC Merced, going 22-24 (.917) from the stripe. That is the third-best free-throw percentage in program history. It's worth noting that 10 of the top 11 free-throw performances in Otter history have come since Isaac Williams became CSUMB's head coach for the 2017-18 season.

TRIPLE-DOUBLE DIGITS: Once again, at least three Otters scored in double digits Sunday at UC Merced. This time, five different Otters turned the trick, led by Joey Bilello (19 points). The others were: Jaden Tengan (18), Ashton Reese (13), Chol Deng (11) and Michael Mora (10). It marked the 18th consecutive game that at least three Otters have scored in double figures

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Joey Bilello 19; REBOUNDS: Chol Deng 8; ASSISTS: Chol Deng 4; BLOCKS: Michael Mora 2; STEALS: Joey Bilello/Chol Deng 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… CSUMB continues its 4-game CCAA roadtrip by visiting the Inland Empire for a pair of games next weekend. The trip begins Thursday (Jan. 8) when the Otters face Cal Poly Pomona. They'll tip-off at 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
