Otters Sweep Day 2 At Kickoff Classic

Otters beat Biola, Hawaii-Hilo by 5-4 scores

IRVINE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay pulled out a pair of games that went down to the wire, defeating PacWest Conference foes Biola University and Hawaii-Hilo by identical 5–4 scores Saturday on Day 2 of the Concordia Kickoff Classic at Great Park.

CSUMB (3–1 overall) came from behind to win both games. The Otters overcame a 1–0 deficit with a 5-run second inning before holding off Biola in the opener. They then rallied from 4–1 down in the third inning to walk-off Hilo in their late game on an RBI single from sophomore catcher Catherine Calzada (Lakewood HS/Sacred Heart Univ.).

Freshman Jordan Knutson (Medford, Ore./South Medford HS) went the distance for the second consecutive game to beat Biola. She worked out of two early jams to keep the Otters in the game before pitching around a pair of RBI doubles in the seventh to secure the win.

The Otter offense gave her all the support she would need with a big second inning, highlighted by a 2-run double from senior Gracie Strycula (San Dimas HS) and a 2-run triple from senior Kieley Ganaden (North Salinas HS).

In the late game, sophomore righty Kaitlyn Le (San Ramon/California HS) settled down after allowing four runs through three innings to earn her first win of 2026. She limited the Vulcans to just two hits over the final four innings while striking out four.

A Jackie Perales (Anaheim/Sunny Hills HS) sac fly got the Otters on the board in the second inning. Calzada's 2-run knock capped a 3-run Otter third that tied the game at 4–4.

It stayed that way until the seventh. That's when Ganaden led off with a single before beating the throw on an Abreanna Alba (Soquel HS/Cabrillo College) sac bunt attempt. Ellie Escalante (Soquel HS) followed with a sac bunt of her own to move the runners up 60 feet.

Calzada then ended the affair with a single to drive in her third run of the game.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Otter catcher Catherine Calzada caught Lilliana Garcia trying to take third following a 2-out RBI double for the final out of the game.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Catherine Calzada singled up the middle to plate Kieley Ganaden with the walk-off run in the seventh.

BIOLA GAME EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Catherine Calzada (2), Gracie Strycula (1). TRIPLES: Kieley Ganaden (2). HOME RUNS: None.

HILO GAME EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: None. TRIPLES: Kieley Ganaden (3), Ellie Escalante (2). HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude play at the Concordia Kickoff Classic Sunday when they meet Fort Lewis College for an 8:30 a.m. first pitch.
