Otters Open Season With Historic Win

Freshman Knudson shines with 1-hitter in 16-0 victory

IRVINE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay softball set a school record for runs in a season-opener by exploding for 16 in a 16–0, run-rule win over Vanguard University at the Concordia Kickoff Classic Friday at Great Park.

The Otters finished the day with a split following a 7–4 loss to Nebraska-Kearney in their late game.

Freshman pitcher Jordan Knutson (Medford, Ore./South Medford HS) was masterful in her debutante performance, twirling a 1-hitter with four strikeouts and no walks. Kieley Ganaden (North Salinas HS) and Leah Madden (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) led the potent Otter offense by going a combined 7-for-10 with five runs, a triple and a stolen base.

CSUMB put the game away with a 6-run third inning, highlighted by RBI singles from Sacred Heart University transfer Catherine Calzada (Long Beach/Lakewood HS) and Soquel High School products Ellie Escalante and Nevaeh Martinez.

Martinez and Calzada contributed a pair of doubles while Ganaden and Gracie Strycula (San Dimas HS) added triples to the 16-hit Otter attack.

The Otters battle back in the late game against Nebraska-Kearney, but three errors ultimately derailed their chances for victory. The Lopers scored single runs in the first, second and fourth innings to take a 3–0 lead. But things turned in the fifth when Martinez's RBI double followed Escalante's 2-run triple to tie the score at 3–3.

A pair of fielding in errors in the home half of the fifth allowed Kearney to respond with four runs to regain the lead. The Otters scratched one back in the seventh and brought the potential tying run to the plate before the rally and the game ended.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Nani Arreola's sac fly capped a 6-run third inning that gave the Otters an insurmountable 11–0 lead.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… UNK starter Jerzie Schindler coaxed a flyout from Abreanna Alba, representing the potential tying run, for the final out.

OPENING GAME EXPLOSION… The 16 runs scored in the opener against Vanguard University were the most-ever by the Otters in a season opener. The previous record was 11 runs set four times previously, last against New Mexico Highlands in 2017.

OPENING DAY EXPLOSION… The 20 total runs scored by the Otters at the Concordia Kickoff Classic Friday were the second-most ever scored on opening day by CSUMB. The record is 22 runs set in a pair of 11–1 victories over New Mexico Highlands and the University of Mary at the Desert Stinger in 2017.

VANGUARD GAME EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Nevaeh Martinez (1), Catherine Calzada (1). TRIPLES: Kieley Ganaden (1), Gracie Strycula (1). HOME RUNS: None.

UNK GAME EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Nevaeh Martinez (2). TRIPLES: Ellie Escalante (1). HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue play at the Concordia Kickoff Classic Saturday with games against Biola University at 10:30 a.m. and Hawaii-Hilo at 3:30 p.m.
