SEASIDE, Calif. — Junior Jaden Tengan (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian HS) changed his position from guard to miracle worker Thursday night, deliver two 3-pointers in the final 19 seconds of regulation to help Cal State Monterey Bay to an improbable 89–83 overtime victory over UC Merced in The Kelp Bed.

Tengan, who finished with a season-high 33 points, saved his most important buckets for the waning seconds of regulation. First, he banked in a 3-pointer with just under four seconds remaining to pull the Otters to within 74–71. After the Otter defense forced a turnover on the ensuing inbounds play, he drilled another from long range with one-tenth of a second on the clock to force overtime.

An old-fashioned 3-point play by Joey Bilello (Littleton, Colo./ThunderRidge HS) on the first possession of overtime, followed by a Miki Gacic (Belgrade, Serbia/Asheville [N.C.] School) layup, capped an 11–0 run that turned a 74–68 deficit into a 79–74 lead the Otters wouldn't relinquish.

CSUMB started the game on fire, racing to a 17–4 lead over the first six minutes. But Merced battled back, trimming its deficit to five (41–36) by halftime.

The Bobcats took their first lead of the night at 44–43 four minutes into the second half. That was the first of seven lead changes over a furious 8-minute span.

Sterling McClanahan knocked down a jumper and a 3-pointer to break a 58–58 tie with just over seven minutes remaining. It was a lead that lasted all the way until Tengan put on his cape to save the day.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when Joey Bilello knocked down a free throw with five seconds remaining to extend the Otter lead to 89–83.

TENGAN PASSES 1,000 POINTS: Junior Jaden Tengan's season high 33 points lifted him to No. 4 on the Otter career scoring list with 1,026 points. He became the seventh player in Otter history to reach the career 1,000-point mark. He needs 50 points to pass Matt Dalhamer for the No. 4 spot. Alex Fertig owns the Otter career scoring record with 1,370 points

THE ROARING '20s: Jaden Tengan's 33-point game in the win over UC Merced was his seventh 20-point game of the season. They're the most 20-point games by an Otter since Levi Frankland posted seven during the 2022-23 season.

TENGAN FROM DOWNTOWN: Jaden Tengan's 33-point effort in Thursday's win over UC Merced game came on the power of a 7-for-12 shooting night from downtown. Only Joe Wall and Brandon Ward — who each posted eight in a game — have ever made more 3-pointers in a game in CSUMB history.

TRIPLE-DOUBLE DIGITS: Once again, at least three Otters scored in double digits in Thursday's win over UC Merced. This time, the honors went to: Jaden Tengan (31), Michael Mora (15) and Miki Gacic (12). It marked the 23rd consecutive game in which at least three Otters scored in double figures.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jaden Tengan 33; REBOUNDS: Mezziah Oakman 9; ASSISTS: Joey Bilello 3; BLOCKS: Michael Mora 2; STEALS: Jaden Tengan 4.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… CSUMB continues its 4-game homestand by hosting Stanislaus State Saturday. They'll tip-off at 3 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
