East Bay Stays Hot, Beats Otters 92–71

Mora leads five Otters in double figures with 18 points

HAYWARD, Calif. — Number five ranked Cal State East Bay proved its ranking is well earned again Saturday, winning its 18th consecutive game with a 92–71 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay in Pioneer Gym.

East Bay's defense stole the show, holding the normally potent Otter offense to just 71 points — 10 below its CCAA leading average entering the game — including a season-low five 3-point field goals0 made. The Pioneers rode an opponent season-high 19 offensive rebounds into a 49–30 edge on the boards.

The game's outcome remained in doubt for the first 25 minutes. That's when a 15–2 run turned East Bay's 3-point lead into a 59–43 advantage. The Pioneer lead gradually expanded to as many as 24 points before settling on the 21-point final margin.

The always balanced Otter offense once again put five players in double figures, led by a game-high 18 points from sophomore Michael Mora (Palo Alto/Univ. of Vermont). Senior Mezziah Oakman (Columbia, S.C./UCSB) just missed his fifth double-double with 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… As is tradition, we use the Bill James Safe Lead Formula in this space to determine when the game was over statistically. Saturday, that moment came when a Josh Ijeh bucket gave East Bay an 85–62 lead with 5:09 remaining.

A CURFEW DOWNTOWN: After matching their season high (and third best total ever) with 15 3-pointers in consecutive games, the Otters made a season-low five threes Saturday night at East Bay.

TRIPLE-DOUBLE DIGITS: Once again, at least three Otters scored in double digits Saturday at Cal State East Bay. This time, the honors went to: Michael Mora (18), Mezziah Oakman (13), Ashton Reese (12), Jaden Tengan (10) and Chol Deng (10). It marked the 24th consecutive game in which at least three Otters scored in double figures.

A QUINTET OF DOUBLE-DIGITS: Saturday's game at Cal state East Bay marked the 11th time in 18 games this season that at least four Otters scored in double digits, and the third time that five Otters did it.

SPREADING THE WEALTH: Of the 10 Otters who have seen action in at least eight games this season, nine of them have registered at least one double-digit scoring game.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT: POINTS: Michael Mora 18; REBOUNDS: Mezziah Oakman 9; ASSISTS: Michael Mora 3; BLOCKS: Mezziah Oakman 2; STEALS: Chol Deng/Miki Gacic 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT: The Otters return to the friendly confines of The Kelp Bed to begin a 4-game homestand next week. The fun starts with a visit from new CCAA member UC Merced Thursday (Jan. 29). Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
