Cold Shooting Spoils Late Rally At Stanislaus

Tengan goes off for 27 in 79-77 loss

TURLOCK, Calif. — A hard-fought late comeback wasn't enough to overcome a cold-shooting night as Cal State Monterey Bay fell at the buzzer to Stanislaus State, 79–77, Friday in Fitzpatrick Arena.

CSUMB got a season-high 27 points from junior Jaden Tengan (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian) and 16 from CCAA leading scorer Michael Mora (Palo Alto/Vermont). For the third consecutive game, however, the Otters shot below 30 percent from long range (27.6 pct.), and that proved to be the difference in an otherwise even affair.

The Otters lead by eight points midway through the second half at 43–35 before Stanislaus made its biggest run of the night. A pull-up jumper by Mark Jones ignited a 14–2 Warrior burst that flipped the 8-point deficit into a 49–45 lead for the home side. CSUMB wouldn't lead again over the final 10 minutes.

CSUMB did pull two within two several times, including to within 76–74 on an Ashton Reese (Scottsdale, Ariz./UMBC) jumper with 32 seconds remaining. A Mora 3-pointer made it 78–77 Stanislaus, but with just 0.2 seconds left.

Tengan fouled Jason Zimmeron the inbounds play, and he sunk 1-of-2 free throws to account for the final margin.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… As is tradition, we use the Bill James Safe Lead Formula in this space to determine when the game was over statistically. That moment didn't come until the clock hit all zeroes Friday night.

ROAD SWEET ROAD: The Otters saw their perfect 3–0 road start come to an end Friday at Stanislaus State. It marked just the second time in program history (and the first since the 2021-22 season) that CSUMB won its first three true road games.

TAKING CARE OF THE ROCK: After committing a season-low seven turnovers in their 2025 finale against Cal Poly Humboldt, the Otters turned the ball over just 11 times while starting 2026 at Stanislaus State. That matches their second-lowest turnover mark of the season.

TRIPLE-DOUBLE DIGITS: Once again, at least three Otters scored in double digits Friday at Stanislaus State. This time, the honors went to Jaden Tengan (27), Michael Mora (16) and Ashton Reese (12). It marked the 17th consecutive game that at least three Otters have scored in double figures

LEADERS OF THE RAFT…POINTS: Jaden Tengan 27; REBOUNDS: Mezziah Oakman 12; ASSISTS: Miki Gacic 7; BLOCKS: Michael Mora/Mezziah Oakman 1; STEALS: Miki Gacic/Jaden Tengan 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 4-game CCAA roadtrip with their first-ever visit to UC Merced Sunday (Jan. 4)). Tip-off will be at 3 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
