Big Bats Lead To Split At No. 14 East Bay

Otters score 10 runs on 14 hits in Saturday’s opener

HAYWARD, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay exploded for 10 runs in the opener to earn a big split at No. 14 Cal State East Bay Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Field. The Otters won Game 1 10–4 before East Bay rebounded to take the series finale, 7–0.

Oli Perez (Ceres HS) hit a pair of doubles and Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) hit her sixth homer of the season to lead the 14-hit attack in Saturday's opener. But CSUMB put the game way well before those events.

Anastacia and Abreanna Alba (Watsonville HS) opened the game with a pair of singles in front of Nevaeh Martinez (Soquel HS), who doubled the sisters home to give CSUMB a 2–0 lead three batters into the game. Ellie Escalante's (Soquel HS) RBI single capped a 3-run Otter second that gave CSUMB all the offense it would need.

Alcayaga's solo shot in the third extended the lead to 6–2. Perez's first double drove in another run in the fourth. Gracie Strycula (San Dimas HS) drove the dagger into the Pioneers when her 2-run double made in 9–4 Otters in the sixth.

East Bay ace Marissa Quintero silenced Otter bats in the nightcap, tossing her second shutout in as many days. Abreanna Alba collected two of CSUMB's four hits in the game.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Oli Perez's RBI double extended the Otter lead to 7–2 in the fourth inning. East Bay never brought the tying run to the plate again.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Ysabella Cortez hit a sac fly to cap a 4-run East Bay fourth inning and close the day's scoring.

MARTINEZ UP 19TH IN DOUBLES… Nevaeh Martinez hit her 13th double of the season in Game 1 Saturday at East Bay, moving her up to No. 19 on the CSUMB single-season doubles list. She needs two more to earn a spot in the Top 10.

DOUBLE MARTINEZ DOUBLES NEWS… Nevaeh Martinez will enter next week ranked No. 2 in the CCAA with 13 doubles. Mireya Rico of Cal State Dominguez Hills leads the league with 14.

ALCAYAGA HITS 26TH HOMER: Ally Alcayaga hit her 26th career home run in Game 2 Friday at Cal State East Bay, her second in as many days. She owns the No. 3 spot in the Otter record book. She will enter next week ranked No. 4 on the CCAA home run chart.

I'M WALKING, YES INDEED…  (With apologies to the legendary Fats Domino) Oli Perez claimed her 52nd career walk Saturday at East Bay, tying her with Nicole Pires for No. 12 on the Otter career list. She needs nine more to tie Jamie Moon and Alma Garcia for a spot in the Top 10.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Nevaeh Martinez (13), Nani Arreola (5), Oli Perez 2 (5, 6), Gracie Strycula (1). TRIPLES: Gracie Strycula (1). HOME RUNS: Ally Alcayaga (6).

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: None. TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to the friendly confines of the Otter Sports Complex to open a 4-game series against Stanislaus State Friday (Apr. 11). First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
