Otters Frustrate Fresno, Finish With Flourish

CSUMB takes third at WWPA Championship with 11-2 win

SALEM, W.Va. — Cal State Monterey Bay water polo matched its second-best postseason finish ever with a dominating performance in an 11–2 victory over Fresno Pacific University in the Western Water Polo Association third place match Sunday morning at the Peak Health Aquatics Center at Mylan Park.

With the victory, the Otters earned a Top 3 finish at the WWPA Championship for the third time ever and the second time in the past three seasons. The Otters placed second in 2023.

Sunday's game was the rubber match between the Otters for 2025. Each team had defended its home waters successfully in a pair of barn-burners earlier this month.

No late heroics would prove necessary Sunday, however, as the Otters scored all the goals they would need in the game's first five minutes. Autumn Day (Murrieta Valley HS), Kira Clark (Fremont/Mission San Jose HS) and Katie Rudis (Oceanside/El Camino HS) each registered first period scores to stake CSUMB to an early 3–0 lead.

The Sunbirds pulled one back on the power play early in the second period, but it was all Otters after that. CSUMB's suffocating defense pitched a shutout for the next 15:54, while it's offense scored six unanswered goals to put the match on ice.

Seniors Day and Allyson Ainsworth (West Sacramento/River City HS) fittingly capped the match and 2025 season with a pair of late goals to account for the final margin.

Day and Abby Allan (Clovis/Sanger HS) each scored twice to pace the balanced Otter attack. Ainsworth added three assists and three steals. Freshman goalkeeper Marissa White (Union City/Mission San Jose HS) made 11 saves while becoming just the sixth goalkeeper in CSUMB history to record nine wins in a season.

Day and Ainsworth both earned to the WWPA Championship All-Tournament first team honoros for their efforts this weekend. White earned second team all-tournament recognition.

The WWPA Tournament brings the 2025 Otter water polo season officially to a close. The Otters finished with a 9–19 record overall, including a 9–6 record against non-NCAA Division I opponents. The nine wins were their most since winning 10 games in 2019.
