Nulick Gem, Alcayaga Bomb Lead To Split

Nulick tosses first shutout, Alcayaga hits team-high 9th HR

SEASIDE, Calif. — The past and future of Cal State Monterey Bay softball were on display Friday at the Otter Sports Complex as senior catcher Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) blasted her 29th career home run and freshman ace Kadence Nulick (Madera/Buchanan HS) tossed her first collegiate shutout to lead the Otters to a split with visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Alcayaga's fourth-inning shot, a towering fly ball to right center, supported the 5-hit brilliance of Nulick, who continued the fantastic finish to her freshman season.

Freshman Nevaeh Martinez (Soquel HS) actually gave Nulick the only run she would need when her single cashed in a leadoff double by Anastacia Alba (Watsonville HS) in the first inning.

It appeared as if a sweep might be in the offing when Martinez's sac fly and Emma Mendoza's (Fountain Valley/Edison HS) RBI knock gave the Otters an early 2–1 lead in the nightcap. Senior pitcher Savannah Madrigal (Simi Valley/Chaminade Prep) kept performing like Houdini to escape jams, stranding nine Toros through six innings.

But Dominguez Hills pieced together enough opportunities, scoring single runs in the fourth and sixth before tacking on two in the seventh to take control. Doubles by Gracie Strycula (San Dimas HS) and Abreanna Alba (Watsonville HS/Cabrillo College) helped the Otters pull two runs back, but that's all they would get.

Anastacia Alba led the Otter offense with four hits Friday, including three in Game 2. Mendoza (3-for-4) and Alcayaga (2-for-5) also hit safely in both games.

The Otters and Toros will close the regular season with a doubleheader Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 11:10 a.m. following the traditional Senior Day Ceremonies, which begin at 10:50.
