Otters Fall Twice Saturday At Sonoma

Seawolves rally to win Game 1; hold off rally to take Game 2

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay's final trip to Sonoma State ended on a sour note as the Otters dropped a doubleheader, 4–3 and 5–3, Saturday afternoon at Seawolf Field.

CSUMB held a 3–1 leading with one out in the seventh inning of the opener before six Somona batters reached base, with Iris Brejano's 2-run single capping the comeback. Sonoma led 4–1 after five in the nightcap before holding off a pair of Otter comeback attempts to complete the sweep.

Ally Alcayaga's (Sonoma Valley HS) single staked CSUMB to a 1–0 lead in the second inning of Game 1. Sonoma tied it in the third before the Otters took advantage of four Seawolf errors in the fifth inning to break back on top, 3–1.

Freshman pitcher Kadence Nulick (Madera/Buchanan HS), meanwhile, had settled down after allowing the run in the third, retiring 11 consecutive batters until the Sonoma hitters caught fire in the seventh.

Sonoma scored twice in the first inning of the nightcap before freshmen Mikaya Griego (Diamond Bar HS) and Kaitlyn Le (San Ramon/California HS) calmed the storm to give the Otter offense a chance. The Otters got one back in the fifth but gave it back on a double steal in the bottom half of the frame.

CSUMB loaded the bases with one out in the sixth but couldn't score. Abreanna Alba (Watsonville HS/Cabrillo College) doubled to cut the deficit in half in the seventh inning, but that's as close at the Otters would get.

Alba and Oli Perez (Ceres HS) were the only Otters to hit safely in both games Saturday, with each collecting a double as well. Anastacia Alba (Watsonville HS) had two hits in Game 1.

The Otters will close the regular season at home Apr. 25–26 when Cal State Dominguez Hills visits the Otter Sports Complex for a 4-game series.
