Alba, Madrigal Lead Split At No. 15 San Marcos

Madrigal throws complete game, Alba homers in Game 2 victory

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — A dominant pitching performance by senior Savannah Madrigal (Simi Valley/Chaminade Prep) and the second home run of the season by Anastacia Alba (Watsonville HS) led the Cal State Monterey Bay softball team to a split with No. 15 Cal State San Marcos Friday at the CSUSM Softball Field.

CSUMB dropped the opener, 5–3, before storming back to take the nightcap, 7–1.

Madrigal scattered five hits while tossing her fourth complete game of the season. San Marcos scored its lone run on consecutive doubles in the fourth inning that, temporarily, tied the game, 1–1.

Very temporarily, as it turned out. Jackie Perales (Anaheim/Sunny Hills HS) led off the Otter fifth with a walk in front of Alba, who drilled her homer down the left field line to put CSUMB back on top, 3–1.

The Otters blew the game open with a 4-run seventh inning. Nevaeh Martinez (Soquel HS) opened the door with a 2-run single. Nani Arreola (Fillmore/Oaks Christian) doubled home another run and Emma Mendoza (Fountain Valley/Edison HS) capped the scoring with a sac fly.

Freshman Kadence Nulick (Madera/Buchanan HS) was equally brilliant in the circle in the opener, but took a hard-luck loss. She allowed just four hits, but four Otters errors allowed as many unearned runs to score and the Cougars raced to a 5–0 lead through four.

The Otter offense manufactured three runs on three hits in the top of the fifth to climb back into the game. Arreola singled to lead off the seventh, but reliever Savannah Coyle struck out the next three batters to seal the San Marcos victory.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Savannah Coyle struck out the side after allowing a lead off single in the seventh.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Emma Mendoza's sac fly capped a 4-run Otter seventh that put the game out of reach.

BEATING THE BEST… Friday's 7–1 win over No. 15 Cal State San Marcos was CSUMB's 61st win against a nationally–ranked opponent since the program began in 2006. CSUMB is 61–86 all–time against Top 25 opponents.

MADRIGAL MOVES UP: Savannah Madrigal earned her 12th career win Friday at Cal State San Marcos. That ties her with Tori Pierucci for No. 16 on the Otter career wins list. She needs one more to tie Shelair Rowell and Caitlin Wallace for No. 13.

DOUBLE THE FUN… Nevaeh Martinez hit her CCAA-leading 11th double in Game 1 Friday at Cal State San Marcos.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Nevaeh Martinez (11). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Nani Arreola (4). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Anastacia Alba (2).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters close their 4-game series at No. 15 Cal State San Marcos with a doubleheader Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
