Otters Split Pitching Duels With No. 21 SFSU

CSUMB takes opener 3-2, falls 2-0 in nightcap

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay softball split a pair of pitching duels with No. 21 San Francisco State, winning 3–2 and losing 2–0, Saturday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

The Otters took the opener thanks to a brilliant relief effort from freshman Kadence Nulick (Madera/Buchanan HS), who inherited a bases-loaded, 1-out jam in the first inning and allowed just a single run to score. She followed with six innings of 4-hit pitching, striking out four against no walks.

CSUMB took the lead thanks to a 2-run double from freshman Nevaeh Martinez (Soquel HS) in the first inning. But Gator starter Elise Roy settled in from that point, and both pitchers put up zeroes until SFSU finally blinked in the sixth.

Nani Arreola (Fillmore/Oaks Christian HS) led off the inning with a walk then gave way to pinch runner Gracie Strycula (San Dimas HS). After Emma Mendoza (Fountain Valley/Edison HS) advanced Strycula with a sac bunt, Malia Martin (Lynwood/El Camino College) hit a hard grounder off the glove of Lexi Holihan at third base, sending Strycula to third.

Martin alertly drew herself into a pickle, where Gator first baseman Shaunessy Cardwell took her eye off the ball, bobbling a throw that allowed Strycula to race home with the winning run.

The Gators took advantage of an Otter error to break the ice in the nightcap. Kai DeLeon drew a leadoff walk, stole second then came all the way around to score when the throw hit her and caromed into left center.

The recipient of that bad luck was senior righty Savannah Madrigal (Simi Valley/Chaminade Prep), who allowed one only one slap and two bunt singles — the combined distance of which wouldn't have reached the pitchers circle — in 4 1/3 stellar innings. The Gators parlayed the last of those bunts with a squeeze bunt in the fifth to account for the final run.

The Otters had several opportunities to get those runs back, but grounded into a pair of double plays in the fifth and sixth innings. They brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the seventh before Gator ace Mari Tajeda Bajan caught Otter freshman Karisa Hawkins looking to end it.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Gracie Strycula came around to score on an error to break a 2–2 tie in the sixth. Kadence Nulick tossed a 1-2-3 seventh to make it official.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Mari Tajeda Bajan caught Otter freshman Karisa Hawkins, representing the winning run, looking to end it.

BEATING THE BEST… Saturday's 3–2 win over No. 21 San Francisco State was CSUMB's 60th win against a nationally–ranked opponent since the program began in 2006. CSUMB is 60–85 all–time against Top 25 opponents.

DOUBLE THE FUN… Nevaeh Martinez hit her CCAA-leading 10th double in Saturday's Game 1 win over San Francisco State.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Abreanna Alba (6), Nevaeh Martinez (10). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: None. TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road to face their second nationally-ranked opponent in a row when they meet No. 18 Cal State San Marcos for a pair of doubleheaders Mar. 21–22.
