Otters Grind Out Split In Chico

CSUMB takes opener 4-2, falls in nightcap 2-1

CHICO, Calif. — Two more strong performances led to a solid doubleheader split for the Cal State Monterey Bay softball team in Chico Saturday afternoon. The Otters touched Wildcat ace Amelie Valdez for a season-high four runs to take the opener, 4–2, before the Wildcats used a pair of solo home runs to come from behind for a 2–1 win in the nightcap.

Freshman Nevaeh Martinez (Soquel HS) swung the big bat in the opener, driving home a run in the first with her sixth double of the season, then breaking a 2–2 tie with a run-scoring single in the fifth.

Savannah Madrigal (Simi Valley/Chaminade Prep) threw five innings of 3-hit, shutout relief to improve to 4–1 on the season. Freshman Kaitlyn Le (San Ramon/California HS) worked out of a jam in the seventh by getting the final two batters for her first collegiate save.

CSUMB looked like it was on its way to a sweep when Kieley Ganaden (North Salinas HS) singled home former Wildcat Anastacia Alba (Watsonville HS) to give the Otters a 1–0 lead. But promising Otter freshman Kadence Nulick (Madera/Buchanan HS) took the hard-luck loss by yielding solo home runs in the third and fourth innings for Chico's only scores of the game.

Abreanna Alba (Watsonville HS)/Cabrillo College) and Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) were the only Otters to hit safely in both games. Alba finished the day 3-for-6 while Alcayaga went 2-for-6 with a double.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Kaitlyn Le coaxed Aiyana Curry to pop to shallow right center for the final out with the potential tying runs on base.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… pinch runner Jayden Bernal was caught stealing representing the potential tying run in the seventh. She was CSUMB's final base runner.

KEEP IT CLEAN… Otter defense has been a strong point throughout the early going, and the team added another pair of errorless performances to its ledger Saturday in Chico. The Otters have played error free-ball in seven of the last eight games, and have not made more than one error in a game since their season-opener on Jan. 31.

LOOKING AHEAD IN THE FIELD… Although it's quite arguably too early to be looking this far ahead, CSUMB's .983 fielding percentage would break the school record of .977 set by the CCAA championship squad of 2015.

NOTHING GOLD CAN STAY… With apologies to Robert Frost, even the best things in life must end, as proved Saturday when Anastacia Alba her career-best 8-game hitting streak and her reached base streak of 12 games both ended in the opener. On the plus side, she started a new streak by going 2-for-3 in the nightcap

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Nevaeh Martinez (6), Ally Alcayaga (4). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: None. TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… CSUMB returns to the friendly confines of the Otter Sports Complex for its 2025 home opener when Cal State San Bernardino visits for a 4-game series Feb. 28 and Mar. 1. The action kicks off Friday with a noon first pitch.
