Otters Sweep Coyotes In Home Openers

Madrigal goes the distance in Game 1; Otters walk it off in the 8th in Game 2

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay christened its 2025 home schedule with a sweep of Cal State San Bernardino Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex. The Otters took the opener, 3–1, then completed the sweep, 9–8, thanks to Ellie Escalante's walk-off double in the eighth.

CSUMB improved to 10–6 overall and 3–3 in CCAA play with the sweep. San Bernardino dipped to 9–9 and 3–3.

The Otters took the opener behind a 5-hit, complete-game effort from senior Savannah Madrigal (Simi Valley/Chaminade Prep), who improved to 5–1 with the victory. The Otter offense created three runs from whole cloth in the first inning to make her effort stand up, using a pair of bases-loaded walks and an Oli Perez (Ceres HS) sac fly.

San Bernardino scored its only run in the second inning thanks to a bases-loaded walk of its own.

After allowing that run, Madrigal settled down and retired 14 of the final 17 batters she faced, including seven of the last eight.

The pitcher's duel that was game one gave way to a wild nightcap in which the teams combined to score eight runs in the first inning alone. The Coyotes scored three in the top half before the Otters responded with a five spot in the home half. Escalante's 2-run double was the big blow.

Abreanna Alba (Watsonville HS/Cabrillo College) added a run with an RBI single in the second before Nevaeh Martinez (Soquel HS) and Nani Arreola (Fillmore/Oaks Christian HS) extended the lead to 8–3 in the fourth with an RBI double and single respectively.

The Coyotes rebounded with five unanswered runs in the next two inning to tie the game at 8–8. But all that did was set up the Otter walkoff.

Coyote reliever Samantha Vargas appeared ready to send the game to a ninth inning when Arreola extended the eighth by floating a 2-out single up the middle. Escalante followed by crushing a 3–1 pitch to the wall in dead center. Pinch runner Gracie Strycula (San Dimas HS) raced all the way home from first, just beating the relay throw to start the Otter celebration.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Savannah Madrigal fanned Alex Hooper with a runner on to end the sixth. The Coyotes never got the tying run to the plate again.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Ellie Escalante's second double of the game plated Gracie Strycula with the walk-off run in the eighth.

KEEP IT CLEAN… All good things must come to an end. Such was the case with the Otter errorless streak that ended at 42 1/3 innings over the last seven games with a first-inning error in Friday's nightcap. Nevertheless, the Otters still sport a healthy .981 fielder percentage through 16 games.

DOUBLE THE FUN… Led by a pair of 2-baggers from Ellie Escalante, the Otter rapped six doubles in Friday's Game 2 win over Cal State San Bernardino. That mark ranks No. 5 in the Otter record book. The last time the Otters hit more doubles came when they set a school record with eight against Simon Fraser University on Apr. 1, 2022.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: None. TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Abreanna Alba (3), Ellie Escalante 2 (2), Nevaeh Martinez (7), Jackie Perales (1), Oli Perez (2). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4-game series with Cal State San Bernardino with a Saturday doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
