Otters Fall In Pair of Extra-Inning Walkoffs

Otters drop pair of 8-inning decisions, 1-0 and 5-4

CHICO, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay received a tough welcome to its California Collegiate Athletic Association schedule by falling in a pair of walk-off decisions Friday afternoon at Wildcat Field. Host Chico State took the opener, 1–0 and the nightcap, 5–4. Both games went eight innings.

In the opener, Otter freshman Kadence Nulick (Madera/Buchanan HS) threw a 2-hit shutout through seven innings, only to see a pair of Chico hits account for the game's only run with one out in the eighth.

Otter senior Savannah Madrigal (Simi Valley/Chaminade Prep) got the start in the second game and tossed 3 1/3 innings of 1-hit, shutout ball. Her offense staked her to a 4–0 lead thanks to a 2-run double from sophomore Abreanna Alba (Watsonville HS/Cabrillo College) in the first and an RBI triple from junior Ellie Escalante (Soquel HS) in the third.

Freshman Kaitlyn Le (San Ramon/California HS) came on in relief of Madrigal in the fourth inning and escaped a bases-loaded, 1-out jam to keep CSUMB in front. But four of the first five Wildcats to bat in the fifth inning singled, and Aiyana Curry cleaned them up with a 3-run double to tie the score at 4–4.

Otter third baseman Anastacia Alba (Watsonville HS), a former Chico State starter, led of the Otter seventh with a double and moved to third on a Jackie Perales (Anaheim/Sunny Hills HS) fly ball, but the Otters couldn't bring her home. It proved to be CSUMB's final scoring opportunity.
 

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Kennedy Gustin's 1-out single with the bases loaded in the eighth inning brought home the game's only run.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Marissa Anderson's sac fly plated Elisa Haas with the walk-off run.

KEEP IT CLEAN… Otter defense has been a strong point throughout the early going and the team added another pair of errorless performances to its ledger Friday in Chico. The Otters have played error free-ball in five of the last six game, and have not made more than one error in a game since their season-opener on Jan. 31.

LOOKING AHEAD IN THE FIELD… Although it's quite arguably too early to be looking this far ahead, CSUMB's .981 fielding percentage would break the school record of .977 set by the CCAA championship squad of 2015.

SAYING HELLO TO SOME OLD FRIENDS… Anastacia Alba had a fun afternoon saying hi to her old friends from Chico State. She finished the day 3-for-7 with a double and a pair of RBI.

ALBA KEEPS ROLLING… Anastacia Alba collected hits in both games Friday at Chico to run her hitting streak to a career-best eight games and her reached base streak to all 12 games this season.

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Abreanna Alba (2), Anastacia Alba (3). TRIPLES: Ellie Escalante (2). HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4-game series with Chico State with a Saturday doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
