Alcayaga Bombs Lead To Walk-off Win

Ally Alcayaga hits a school-record three homers in 9-7 win over Jessup

TURLOCK, Calif. — Senior catcher Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) went yard a school-record three times Sunday, including a walk-off blast in the seventh inning, to lead Cal State Monterey Bay to a 9–7 victory over Jessup University in the Tournament of Champions finale at Pedretti Park.

Alcayaga, who hit a game-tying homer in her previous at bat an inning earlier, broke a 7–7 tie with her 2-run shot with two outs in the seventh. The victory lifted CSUMB to 7–3 overall, including a 4–1 record at the ToC.

The walk-off capped a wild game that featured five lead changes. The Otters scored three times in the first inning to grab the early lead before four unanswered runs put Jessup on top 4–3 in the fourth.

Alcayaga's first home run, another 2-run job, put CSUMB back in front in the home half of the fourth, before Jessup came right back with two in the fifth to reclaim the lead. Alcayaga's solo shot in the sixth tied the game again in front of an RBI knock from Abreanna Alba (Watsonville HS/Cabrillo College), that put the Otters back on top, 7–6.

Things took a dramatic turn in the top of the seventh when, down to their last strike, first baseman Sarah Giles hit a home run to knot the score at 7–7. The game appeared destined for extra innings when Ellie Escalante (Soquel HS) grounded to short with two outs in the bottom of the inning, but an error brought Alcayaga back to the plate for her star turn.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Ally Alcayaga happened.

THREE FOR THE BOOKS… As mentioned earlier, Ally Alcayaga became the first player in Otter softball history to homer three times in a game during Sunday's win over Jessup University. Sixteen different Otters — including Ally and her twin sister Abby Alcayaga — had hit two homers in a game a total of 23 times. Ally joins Shae Olds (four times), Julia Garcia (three) and Samantha Luna (two) as the only Otters to hit two or more homers in a game twice.

ALCAYAGA MOVES UP THE HR LIST… With three homers in Sunday's win over Jessup University, Ally Alcayaga moved past Jackie Serna (21) and Bianca Noriega (22) into third on the Otter career home run list with 23. She needs 10 more to catch Ashlee Trotter for the No. 2 spot. Shae Olds, one of the greatest sluggers in CCAA history, holds the CSUMB record with 44 home runs.

A PERFECT 10… Anastacia Alba went 2-for-4 Sunday against Jessup University and now has reached base safely in all 10 games this season. She also rides a 6-game hitting streak into this week's action.

ALL-TOURNAMENT IN SPIRIT… Although no official all-tournament team was selected at the Tournament of Champions, several Otters put together weekends worthy of special recognition. Anastacia Alba hits safely in all five games, finishing with a .529 average (9-for-17) with a pair of doubles, three runs and two RBI. Ally Alcayaga hit safely in the final four games, finishing with a .400 average (6-for-15) with two doubles, three HRs, three runs and six RBI. Kieley Ganaden finished with a .375 average, including a double and a pair of triples.

EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Kieley Ganaden (2). TRIPLES: Kieley Ganaden (2). HOME RUNS: Ally Alcayaga 3 (3).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to Chico to open their CCAA schedule with a 4-game series Feb. 21–22. The action kicks off with a doubleheader Feb. 21 starting at noon.
