Otter Streak Ends At Five With Day Two Split

Otters beat ArtU, 7-3; fall to Dominican, 3-1

TURLOCK, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay ran its winning streak to five games with a 7–3 win over Academy of Art before Dominican University spoiled the fun by handing CSUMB a 3–1 defeat in Saturday action at the Tournament of Champions.

The Otters got a superb pitching effort from the duo of Summer Voth (Calabasas HS) and Bella Serrato (Oxnard/Rio Mesa HS), who combined on a 1-hitter in the win over Art. Freshman Kaitlyn Le (San Ramon/California HS) threw five innings of 2-hit, shutout ball against Dominican, but the Penguins scored three times in the second off starter Kadence Nulick (Madera/Buchanan HS) and made those runs stand up.

CSUMB used a pair of crooked numbers to beat the Urban Knights in the opener, scoring three times in the first inning and four times in the third to open a 7–0 lead. Power highlighted the Otter offense with three doubles and two triples among the season-high 13 Otter hits.

Three consecutive hits plated a pair of Penguin runs in their 3-run second inning that proved to be all the offense they would generate or need. But the Otters had trouble solving Dominican pitchers Taylor Rodriguez and Hannah Escalante, who scattered five singles while yielding a lone unearned run.

Anastacia Alba (Watsonville HS), Kieley Ganaden (North Salinas HS) and Jackie Perales (Anaheim/Sunny Hills HS) each collected three hits for the Otters. Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) and Abreanna Alba (Watsonville HS/Cabrillo College) also hit safely in both games for CSUMB.

THE ARTU GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Kieley Ganaden's RBI single put a cap on a 4-run Otter third inning. The Urban Knights never got the tying run to the on deck circle after that.

THE DOMINICAN GAME WAS OVER WHEN… When Hannah Escalante fanned Oli Perez, representing the tying run, to end the sixth inning. The Otters went quietly in the seventh.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Bella Serrato earned her first collegiate victory with four innings of no-hit, shutout relief Saturday in the win over Academy of Art.

AND THEN THERE WAS ONE… Anastacia Alba is the last remaining Otter to have reached base safely in every game this season after going 1-for-3 in both games Saturday.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Oli Perez (1), Anastacia Alba (2), Ally Alcayaga (3). TRIPLES: Kiley Ganaden (1), Ellie Escalante (1). HOME RUNS: None.

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: None. TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude play at the Tournament of Champions Sunday when they meet new NCAA Division II member Jessup University for a noon first pitch.
