Otters Sweep Opening Day, Run Streak To Four

Otters beat Menlo (3-2) and Central Washington (9-1)

TURLOCK, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay swept its opening day schedule at the Tournament of Champions Friday, beating Menlo College 3–2 in nine innings at Pedretti Park before taking a 9–1, run-rule, decision from Central Washington in five innings at Warrior Field.

CSUMB (5–2 overall) ran its win streak to four games with the victories.

Pitching carried the day for the Otters in both games. Freshman Kadence Nulick (Madera/Buchanan HS) pitched 5 1/3 innings of shutout ball in the opener versus Menlo, before giving way to fellow freshman Kaitlyn Le (San Ramon/California HS), who allowed just one earned run in 3 2/3 innings to claim her first collegiate victory.

Senior Savannah Madrigal (Simi Valley/Chaminade Prep) owned the circle in the nightcap against Central Washington. She beat the Wildcats for the second time this season, yielding just three hits in the complete game effort.

The Menlo game was a classic pitcher's duel, with neither team able to score during the seven regulation innings. Playing with the international tiebreaker, CSUMB got RBI singles from Ellie Escalante (Soquel HS) and Jaedyn White (Fairfield/Martinez HS) to break on top in the the eighth, only to see the Oaks rally for two in the home half to force another inning.

The Otters scored again, this time on a fielding error by second baseman Jolena Velasquez, to take a 3–2 lead. The Otter defense then shut the door thank to a heads up, sister-sister play by Watsonville High products Anastacia and Abreanna Alba.

With the Otters in their bunt defense and Gabrielle Roe as the designated runner on second, Anastacia, playing third base, snagged a liner off the bat of Gracie Tuiteleleapaga. Seeing the middle infielders crashing, Roe wandered off second without noticing center fielder Abreanna sneaking in behind her. Alba threw to Alba for the double play to snuff the final Menlo threat.

A Nevaeh Martinez (Soquel HS) double in the third inning opened the scoring against Central Washington. The Otters put the game away with a seven spot an inning later when they sent 14 batters to the plate. RBI doubles by Martinez and Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) were the big blows.

The Menlo College Game Was Over When… third baseman Anastacia Alba threw to center fielder Abreanna Alba covering second base to complete a double play and extinguish the final Menlo scoring opportunity.

The Central Washington Game Was Over When… Anastacia Alba's sac fly extended CSUMB's lead to 6–1 in the fourth inning. Central Washington never got the potential trying run as far as the on deck circle for the remainder of the game.

W-W-W-W… The Otters won their third and fourth consecutive games when they beat Menlo College and Central Washington Friday at the Tournament of Champions. It's the first time they've won four in a row since they won eight straight from Mar. 3–17, 2023.

MADRIGAL TAMES THE WILDCATS… Senior pitcher Savannah Madrigal has been a Wildcat tamer in 2025. She improved to 3–1 on the season with her second victory in as many appearances against CWU. For the season, she is 2–0 with a 1.04 ERA and a .136 opponent batting average versus CWU.

EXTRA-BASE HITS vs. MENLO… DOUBLES: Anastacia Alba (1); TRIPLES: None; HOME RUNS: None.

EXTRA-BASE HITS vs. CENTRAL WASHINGTON… DOUBLES: Ally Alcayaga (2), Nevaeh Martinez 2 (5); TRIPLES: None; HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue play at the Tournament of Champions Saturday when they face Academy of Art (12:30 p.m.) and Dominican University (5:30 p.m.).
