SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team dropped its CCAA opener at Cal State San Marcos, 61–52, Wednesday evening at The Sports Center.
The Otters opened the game with a strong first quarter, building a 17–11 lead through defensive pressure and second-chance opportunities. San Marcos responded in the second quarter with a 23-point frame that shifted momentum, sending CSUMB into halftime trailing 34–33.
The Otters struggled to convert in the third quarter, scoring six points while San Marcos added 10 to extend its lead. CSUMB continued to battle in the fourth, but San Marcos maintained control down the stretch.
Malaysia Lucero led the Otters with 14 points and five rebounds, while
Riley Walls added 11 points and seven boards.
A'ajah Slocum contributed eight points and six rebounds, and
Aliyah Young finished with eight points, including two three-pointers.
CSUMB won the rebounding battle, 41–37, and scored 26 points in the paint, but 18 turnovers and a 19-for-64 shooting night hampered the offense.
The two teams will meet up again in Seaside on Saturday, Dec. 6, with tip-off scheduled for 1 p.m.
