Otters Impress In Season-Opening Win

Bilello, Mora go for 16 each in 86–67 win over WOU

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay scored the first bucket of the night and never trailed in cruising to an 86–67 win over Western Oregon Friday in The Kelp Bed.

Joey Bilello (Littleton, Colo./ThunderRidge HS) knocked down a three on CSUMB's first possession. Michael Mora (Palo Alto/Univ. of Vermont) and Jaden Tengan (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian) followed with long shots of their own and the Otters never looked back.

Western Oregon kept things interesting throughout the first half, pulling to within four late in the period. But a 12–0 run early in the second half gave CSUMB the separation it craved, expanding the lead to 16 at 59–43.
The Wolves cut it to single digits for one possession midway through the period before CSUMB eased away.

Bilello and Mora led four Otters in double figures with 16 points apiece. Tengan added 14 and senior Chol Deng (Sydney, NSW, Australia) chipped in 13.

Freshman Miki Gacic (Belgrade, Serbia) impressed in his collegiate debut with seven assists and a pair of steals. Bilello and Deng shared team-high honors with eight boards apiece.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when Michael Mora tipped in his own miss to extend the Otter lead to 80–62 with 3:06 remaining.
