Otters generate three set points, fall 29-27 in the first

Story Links

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay got off to a fast start, but defending CCAA champion Cal Poly Pomona weathered the early storm to take a 29–27, 25–13, 25–16 win Friday night in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB earned three set points, and had a pair of swings to win the opening frame, but couldn't put away the more experienced Broncos. Pomona raced to big early leads in the second and third sets to keep Monterey at bay for the balance of the match.

Freshman outside hitter Zoe Haan (Phoenix/Sunnyslope HS) led a balanced Otter offense with eight kills. Fellow freshman Juliette D'Eliseo (Carlsbad/Sage Creek HS) and junior middle Lilly Bandle (Jackson, Wisc./West Bend East HS) added seven kills apiece

Senior libero Mia Dilley (Clovis East HS/Fresno CC) led all players with 15 digs while middle blocker Malia Thorne (Newport Harbor HS) had a hand in all four Otter blocks.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Pomona used a gentle 8–3 run in the middle of the third set to open a 17–8 lead.

ALL OUT OF ACES: The Otters had a tough hand to play against the strong serve-receive game of Cal Poly Pomona, failing to generate an ace for the first time this season. Its the first time since Sept. 7, 2024 that the Otters played a match without generating an ace.

CANN REACHES 400 ASSISTS… Junior setter Maya Cann became the 14th setter in Otter history to reach 400 career assists when she posted 24 helpers Friday against Cal Poly Pomona. She sits exactly on 400 assists. She needs four more to pass Hannah Jo Castillon for No. 13 on the list and 83 to pass Ruby Ennis for No. 12.

DILLEY REACHES 500 DIGS… With a match-high 15 digs Friday against Cal Poly Pomona, Mia Dilley became the 23rd player in Otter history to reach 500 career digs (511). She needs 25 more to pass Rachel Freeno and move into the Otter career Top 20.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Zoe Haan 8.0; KILLS: Zoe Haan 8; BLOCKS: Malia Thorne 4; ACES: None; DIGS: Mia Dilley 15.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to the Central Valley for a rematch with UC Merced Saturday in the Gallo Center. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
