Otters Fall At The End, 70-66

Otters and East Bay trade seven lead changes and eight ties in the second half

HAYWARD, Calif. —Cal State Monterey Bay overcame an absolutely frigid start to give itself a chance before falling in the final seconds at Cal State East Bay, 70–66, Thursday night in Pioneer Gym.

Sophomore Jaden Tengan (Santa Clarita Christian) scored 19 points and freshman Michael Mora (Palo Alto/Univ. of Vermont) added 15 to lead CSUMB. Senior Blake Jones (Canberra, Aust.) just missed his third double-double with nine points and eight rebounds.

The Otters started the night 2-for-18 from the floor (1-for-10 from beyond the arc) and 0-for-6 from the line as East Bay built its lead to as many as 12 points in the first half. But the CSUMB defense clamped down, holding the Pioneers scoreless over the final 3:07 of the period as the Otters climbed to within 24–21 at intermission.

The Otters opened the second half the way they finished the first, completing a 15–0 run that gave them a 29–24 lead two minutes after the break. The teams settled into a true battle from that point, playing through seven lead changes and eight ties over the ensuing 14 minutes, with neither team ever able to gain clear control.

Finally, East Bay got consecutive 3-pointers from Payden White and Tyree Campbell to turn CSUMB's 63–60 lead into a 66–63 Pioneer advantage. The Otters couldn't regain the lead again. Ramsey Huff finally hit a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left to seal the win.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… As is tradition, we use the Bill James Safe Lead Formula in this space to determine when the game was over statistically. Thursday at Cal State East Bay, that moment came when Payden White stole an errant Jaden Tengan pass with three seconds remaining.

THE OTTER BLOCK PARTY…  CSUMB's block party continued Thursday at East Bay as the Otters matched their season high for the third time with six blocks. The Otters have rejected 52 shots through the first 12 games, a mark that already ranks No. 18 on the CSUMB single-season list. At their current rate, they will break the school record of 109 blocks set during the 2005–06 campaign.

BILELLO ON THE BLOCKS… It's been a block party for the Otter defense this season and Joey Bilello was Thursday's guest of honor, collecting a career-high three rejections.

A THIEF IN THE NIGHT… Jaden Tengan picked up career-high three steals Thursday at East Bay.

THE TENGAN 500… With 19 points Thursday at Cal State East Bay, Jaden Tengan lifted his career total to 494. He needs six more to become the 30th player in Otter history to score 500 career points.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT…POINTS: Jaden Tengan 19; REBOUNDS: Blake Jones 8; ASSISTS: Alec Zambie 5; BLOCKS: Joey Bilello 3; STEALS: Jaden Tengan 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 4-game roadtrip by heading across the Bay Bridge for an encounter with San Francisco State Saturday (Jan. 11). Tip-off is at 3 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
