Otters Use Stifling Defense To Tame Gators

Solid team effort leads to 60-45 victory

SAN FRANCISCO — Cal State Monterey Bay used a stifling defense and a strong day on the boards to hand San Francisco State a 60–45 defeat Saturday afternoon in the Swamp.

CSUMB played without leading scorer Jaden Tengan (Santa Clarita Christian), but made up for his absence with a solid team effort that saw season-best performances from several players. Senior Blake Jones (Canberra, Aust.) led the balanced effort with 15 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Jackson Corley (Napa/Vintage HS) scored a career-high 12 points while freshman Michael Mora (Palo Alto/Univ. of Vermont) reached double figures for a team-leading eighth time in 13 games with 13 points.

The Otters sprinted to an 11–4 lead in the opening minutes and seemed to take control when they built a 27–13 advantage late in the half. But the Gators made it a game when their 20–4 run in the 10 minutes surrounding halftime gave them surprising 33–31 lead. CSUMB responded immediately with a 10–0 streak of its own to regain control.

The Otter lead never dipped below double digits after a Jones layup gave them a 45–35 edge with 8:25 remaining.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… As is tradition, we use the Bill James Safe Lead Formula in this space to determine when the game was over statistically. Saturday in San Francisco, the game was secure when Blake Jones rebounded a missed Tyjean Burrell 3-pointer with 1:06 left and the Otters leading 55–43.

OTTERS ON THE BLOCKS: With four blocks in Saturday's win at San Francisco State, the Otters moved up to No. 14 on the program's single-season blocks list with 56.  At their current pace, they will break the school record of 109 set by the 2005-06 team.

BLOCKING SHOTS IS A TEAM GAME: Blocking shots has been a team effort for the Otters this season. Konner Baroni (2 blocks), Joey Bilello (1) and Blake Jones (1) combined for CSUMB's four blocks Saturday at San Francisco State and each already finds himself in the Otter single-season Top 25 for blocked shots with half of the season yet to play. Baroni is tied for No. 18 with 16 blocks. Bilello (14) sits at No. 18 while Jones (13) moved into a tie for No. 25.

OTTERS ON THE REBOUND: A big part of Saturday's win at San Francisco State came for CSUMB's work on the glass. The Otters pulled down a season-high 47 rebounds, out-boarding the Gators by 10. It's the ninth time in 13 games that Otters have won the battle of the boards.

DENG IS SATURDAY'S CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARDS: Junior Chol Deng (Sydney, NSW/Greyson CC) led the Otters on the boards Saturday with a season-high nine rebounds

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Blake Jones, 15; REBOUNDS: Chol Deng, 9; ASSISTS: Ariya Briscoe 4; BLOCKS: Konner Baroni 2; STEALS: Jackson Corley 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters The Otters continue their 4-game roadtrip by heading to Southern California for a pair next week. The action starts Thursday (Jan. 16 at Cal Poly Pomona. Tip-off will be at 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
