Sizzling Start Helps Otters Corral Broncos

Bilello, Mora each score 20 in 76-65 victory

POMONA, Calif. —Cal State Monterey Bay got off to an incredible start and rode it to a 76–65 win over Cal Poly Pomona Thursday night in Kellogg Arena.

CSUMB got a career-high 20 points from both sophomore Joey Bilello (Littleton, Colo./ThunderRidge HS) and freshman Michael Mora (Palo Alto/Univ. of Vermont) while sprinting to a 52–27 lead by halftime. Sophomore Jaden Tengan (Santa Clarita Christian) came off the bench to add 10 points and a season-high six rebounds.

The Otters got 3-pointers from Mora and Bilello on their first two possessions and never allowed Pomona within a possession of the lead from that point. When Jackson Corley's (Napa/Vintage HS) layup made it 23–13, the lead reached double digits for all but one possession over the final 32 minutes.

CSUMB led by as many as 27 points late in the first half and again midway through the second before settling on the 11-point final margin.

The Otters shot a season-best 53 percent from the floor (28-of-53). They shot 65 percent in the first half while scoring a season-high 52 points in the period.

In addition to the scoring, CSUMB got a season-high five assists from Mora. Senior Blake Jones (Canberra, Aust.) led the Otters on the glass for the 11th time in 14 games with a game-high seven rebounds.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… As is tradition, we use the Bill James Safe Lead Formula in this space to determine when the game was over statistically. Thursday at Cal Poly Pomona, Jaden Tengan grabbed the rebound of a Michael Ofoegbu miss with 47 seconds remaining and the Otters leading 74–65 to statistically seal the win.

20–20 VISION… Joey Bilello and Michael Mora became the first Otters to score 20 points each in a game since Charles Johnston and Jailen Nelson did it in a 99–92 win over Western Oregon on Nov. 11, 2023.

20–POINT CLUB… With Joey Bilello and Michael Mora each scoring a career-high 20 points in Thursday's 76–65 win at Cal Poly Pomona, they became the second and third Otters to score 20 points in a game this season. They joined Jaden Tengan, who has done it three times.

SPREADING THE WEALTH…  Although Joey Bilello and Michael Mora went large with 20 points apiece, all 10 Otters who saw the floor scored in Thursday's win at Pomona.

THE TENGAN 500… With 10 points in Thursday's win at Cal Poly Pomona, Jaden Tengan lifted his career total to 504. He became the 30th player in Otter history to score 500 career points.

BREAKING THE POMONA CURSE… Thursday's 76–65 win at Cal Poly Pomona snapped a 12-game losing streak to the Broncos that dated back to Jan. 27, 2017. It was CSUMB's longest active winless streak against a single opponent.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT…POINTS: Joey Bilello/Michael Mora 20; REBOUNDS: Blake Jones 7; ASSISTS: Michael Mora 5; BLOCKS: None; STEALS: Alec Zambie 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4-game roadtrip by heading east on the 10 Freeway to take on Cal State San Bernardino Saturday. Tip-off is at 3 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
