Montañez Era Begins With Split In Irvine

Otters lose heartbreaker to Concordia, earn run-rule win over WOU

IRVINE, Calif. — The Emily Montañez era of Cal State Monterey Bay softball got off to a promising start as the Otters earned a solid split on opening day of the Concordia Kickoff Classic Friday at Great Park. The day began with a heartbreaking 4–3 loss to Pac West Conference preseason favorite Concordia-Irvine and ended with a 9–1, run-rule victory over Western Oregon in five innings.

Senior Oli Perez (Ceres HS) swung the big bat for CSUMB, finishing the day 5-for-6 with a triple, a home run and four RBI. Sophomore Cabrillo College transfer Abreanna Alba (Watsonville HS) added three hits, a run and an RBI in her Otter debut.

The Otters fell behind Concordia 4–0 in the opener before staging a furious rally that fell just short. Perez got the Otters back into the game with a 2-run homer in the sixth inning to halve the Eagle lead. Anastacia Alba's (Watsonville HS) RBI single cashed in Jaedyn White's (Fairfield/Rodriguez HS) 1-out double to make it a 1-run game in the seventh.

A Kieley Ganaden (North Salinas HS) single and a Malia Martin (Lynwood/El Camino College) sacrifice bunt put the tying and winning runs into scoring position for freshman Nevaeh Martinez (Soquel HS), but liner to left didn't fall for the final out.

Martinez continued to hit the ball well in the nightcap against WOU, finishing with a pair of hits, including her first collegiate double, to pace the 11-hit Otter attack. She added an RBI single as part of a 5-run Otter fourth that gave CSUMB an 8–1 lead.

Ganaden delivered the final blow with a sac fly to plate Gracie Strycula (San Dimas HS) in the fifth and end the game via the run rule.

Freshman Kadence Nulick went the distance, scattering five hits and striking out three, to earn her first collegiate win.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Nevaeh Martinez lined a ball to left that was snared with the potential go-ahead run in scoring position for the final out.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Ally Alcayaga's pinch-hit, RBI double scored Oli Perez to cap a 5-run fourth inning and give the Otters an insurmountable 8–1 lead.

FOR OPENERS… With the 4–3 loss at Concordia, Otter softball now is 11–8 in season openers dating to its inaugural campaign in 2006.

PEREZ TIES ALCAYAGA IN HOME RUN RACE… Oli Perez hit her 20th career home run in Friday's game at Concordia, tying Ally Alcayaga for fifth on the Otter career home run list. They both are one behind Jackie Serna and two behind Bianca Noriega for fourth and third place on the list.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Six Otters made their collegiate debuts Friday at the Concordia Kickoff Classic. They were freshmen Kaitlyn Le, Nevaeh Martinez, Kadence Nulick and Aolani Uriarte, sophomore Abreanna Alba and junior Malia Martin.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Jaedyn White (1). TRIPLES: Oli Perez (1). HOME RUNS: Oli Perez (1).

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Ally Alcayaga (1), Nevaeh Martinez (1). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue play at the Concordia Kickoff Classic with a pair of games Saturday. They'll face Azusa Pacific at 1 p.m. and Chaminade University at 6 p.m.

THE LAST WORD: "We have been eager to get out on the field and play. I'm proud of our team and leadership and looking forward to the rest of the weekend." — CSUMB Head Coach Emily Montañez
