Another Split For Otters At Kickoff Classic

Otters rally for 8-4 win over Chaminade to close Day 2

IRVINE, Calif. — For the second consecutive day, Cal State Monterey Bay came tantalizingly close to a sweep before settling for a split at the Concordia Kickoff Classic at Great Park.

In the early game, Azusa Pacific scored nine runs in the seventh inning to overcome a 4–3 Otter lead en route to a 12–4 win. But the Otters bounced back with a rally of their own in the night cap, scoring seven unanswered runs to claim an 8–4 win over Chaminade University.

Freshman first baseman Nevaeh Martinez (Soquel HS) swung the big stick for CSUMB Saturday finishing 3-for-7, including a pair of doubles in the win over Chaminade. Junior Malia Martin (Lynwood/El Camino College) collected her first four collegiate hits – all singles – and finished the day 4-for-7.

The Otters overcame an early 3–0 deficit against Azusa Pacific when Jaedyn White's (Fairfield/Martinez HS) 2-run single gave them a 4–3 lead in the sixth inning. But the wheels came off in the seventh when the Cougars needed just five hits against three Otter pitchers to plate nine runs and seal the win.

A 2-run triple by Summer Buck helped Chaminade overcome an early Otter run and take a 3–1 lead in the third inning of the nightcap. But Otter starter Savannah Madrigal (Simi Valley/Chaminade Prep) settled down from that point and her offense did the rest of the heavy lifting.

Run-scoring singles by Kieley Ganaden (North Salinas HS) and White in knotted the score at 3–3 in the fourth. Martinez followed with her second consecutive double to drive home White before Abreanna Alba (Watsonville HS/Cabrillo College) capped the 4-run inning with an RBI single of her own.

Martin put a cap on the scoreline with a 2-run single through the left side in the sixth inning.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… An Otter error allowed the final run to score, capping a 9-run rally by APU.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Malia Martin's 2-run single gave the Otters an 8–4 lead in the sixth.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Malia Martin joined the Otter hit parade with her first two collegiate knocks (she went 2-for-3) in Saturday's early game versus Azusa Pacific.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: None. TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Nevaeh Martinez (2). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude play at the Concordia Kickoff Classic Sunday when they meet Central Washington for a 9 a.m. first pitch.

GO OTTERS!
